Upstate students raise funds to help victims of typhoon-ravaged area of Phillipines

Graduate student Cherry Mae Ignacio, a native of the Philippines, was one of the students who spearheaded the efforts on the Upstate campus.

“I’m very pleased by the response, not just from the students, but from the Upstate employees,” Ignacio said. “I think all of us are touched by the destruction we’ve seen from news reports and this effort gave us a way to help out, even though the disaster is across the globe.”

The money will go to assist the American Red Cross in its relief efforts in the Philippines, especially in areas hardest hit by Typhoon Haiyan.  Officials say more than 6,000 people have died from the natural disaster.

Tom Czajak with the Syracuse Chapter of the American Red Cross applauded the efforts of Upstate’s students.  “Whenever anyone steps up to help those in need thousands of miles away, the altruistic spirit shines brightly.”

Czajak said the money will be sent to the Philippines to assist in bringing clean water stations, among other necessities, to the devastated areas.
