Upstate books make best-seller list

Two books by Upstate Medical University professors have made the best-seller list of one of the world’s premier publishers of mental health books and journals.

The publisher, APPI (American Psychiatric Publishing Inc.), a division of the American Psychiatric Association, listed the books this summer on its list of best-selling psychiatry titles in 2012. Another book is included among the publishing house’s all-time best-sellers in the field of psychotherapy.

The books, written by members of Upstate’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, serve as learning tools for mental health clinicians and those in training who are advancing their knowledge of psychotherapy.

“The titles are quite successful,” said John McDuffie, APPI’s editorial director for books. “They are used by a wide audience of clinicians, healthcare providers, educators and students. They are distributed and used throughout the United States and the world.”

“This distinction by the APPI identifies our faculty and Upstate as leaders in furthering the education of future generations of mental health practitioners,” said Robert Gregory, M.D., professor and interim chair of Upstate’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “Our faculty members are respected among their peers and are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise in practice, research and teaching.”

The best-selling books are part of a series called Core Competencies in Psychotherapy. They are:

- The Art and Science of Brief Psychotherapies-An Illustrated Guide (2nd edition), 2012, by Mantosh Dewan, M.D., Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Brett N. Steenbarger, Ph.D., a voluntary faculty member who serves as clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; and Roger P. Greenberg, Ph.D., Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The series editor is Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. This is the only book presenting expert video demonstrations of the major brief psychotherapy models.

- Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Basic Text, Second Edition by Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., who also serves as the series editor. Gabbard has also published the second edition of “Textbook of Psychoanalysis” (2012) and “Professionalism in Psychiatry” (2012). He is the series editor of “Core Competencies in Psychotherapy.” Of the four books in this series, two are from Upstate. Gabbard is listed by Wikipedia as an American psychiatrist known for authoring professional teaching texts for the field. His textbooks have been translated into Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Danish, Chinese, Greek, Romanian, and Spanish. His textbook, Psychodynamics and Clinical Practice, is listed among APPI’s bestsellers in psychiatry titles.
