Upstate Medical University confers degrees

SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D., will award 506 degrees and 18 professional certificates to graduates of the university’s colleges of Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, and Nursing at Upstate’s 2012 Commencement ceremonies Sunday, May 20. Each college will present its own Commencement ceremony that day to individually recognize graduating students.

Patricia J. Numann, M.D., and Abraham C. Verghese, M.D., will receive honorary degrees and address graduates at the College of Medicine Commencement ceremony at 9 a.m. at Crouse Hinds Theater at the John Mulroy Civic Center, 421 Montgomery St., Syracuse.

Numann, who will also speak at the ceremonies for Upstate’s colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, will receive a honorary doctor of science degree. The honorary degree recognizes her work in enhancing the professional advancement of women surgeons, advancing the surgical educational standards for medical students, residents and surgeons, and advocating for and creating women’s health services.

Verghese will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. A physician/author, Verghese is a strong advocate for the value of bedside medicine skills and physical diagnosis. His books, My Own Country, the Tennis Parnter and Cutting for Stone, have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list and offer his insights into the fundamentals of bedside medicine which he feels are essential to patient care and to the doctor/patient relationship.

Amy T. Campbell, J.D., M.B.E., will offer the keynote address at the College of Graduate Studies ceremony. She is assistant professor in Upstate’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities and at the Syracuse University College of Law (courtesy) and associate faculty member in the Bioethics Program of Union Graduate College-Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is policy advisor to the National Implementation Research Network and serves on the Advisory Board of the World Medical & Health Policy Journal.

College of Graduate Studies

The College of Graduate Studies will award 39 degrees: 23 PhD, 6 MD/PhD (conferred jointly with the College of Medicine), and 10 MS. The ceremony will be held at noon in the Medical Alumni Auditorium at Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave, Syracuse. A reception will immediately follow in the main lobby of Weiskotten Hall.

College of Health Professions

The College of Health Professions will award 188 degrees: 83 BS, 25 MS, 7 BPS (bachelor of professional studies) and 73 DPT (doctorates in physical therapy). The ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Crouse Hinds Theater at the John Mulroy Civic Center, 421 Montgomery St., Syracuse. The ceremony includes awards presentations and the presentation of honor society inductees. A reception will immediately follow in the lobby of the Campus Activities Building (C.A.B.), 155 Elizabeth Blackwell St., Syracuse.

College of Medicine

The College of Medicine will confer 160 degrees and 1 certificate: 139 MD, 14 MPH (master’s of public health), 6 MD/PhD (conferred jointly with the College of Graduate Studies), 1 MD/MPH, and 1 certificate of public health. The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. at the Civic Center’s Crouse Hinds Theater. A reception will immediately follow in the C.A.B. lobby.

College of Nursing

The College of Nursing will award 125 degrees and 17 certificates: 44 BS, 81 MS, 7 registered nurse first assistant certificates, 10 post-master’s certificates. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. in the Civic Center’s Crouse Hinds Theater. A reception will immediately follow in the C.A.B. lobby.
