Upstate Gala will support scholarships, renovations
SYRACUSE, N.Y.The 2011 Upstate Gala combines two galas, that of Upstate Medical University and of the former Community General Hospital, with proceeds to benefit both campuses. The event will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, beginning 7 p.m. at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center, 800 S. State St., Syracuse.
According to Eileen Pezzi, Upstate vice president of development and executive director of Upstate Medical University Foundation, the partnership is the result of Upstate's acquisition of Community General Hospital early this summer and the subsequent creation of Upstate University Hospital at Community General.
"We are very excited to merge our efforts in presenting our 2011 gala fundraising event," said Pezzi. "Gala attendees will enjoy a memorable evening of dance, delicious treats and fun while raising funds for programs that will benefit our students and our community."
2011 Upstate Gala proceeds will provide seed money for a long-term scholarship program for students in Upstate's four colleges (Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing). The proceeds will also support the hospital entrance renovation at Upstate University Hospital at Community General.
Dr. John and Bonnie McCabe, and Tom and Julie Quinn, are 2011 Gala co-chairs. Dr. McCabe is chief executive officer of Upstate University Hospital and Upstate University Hospital at Community General. Tom Quinn is senior vice president for health system development at Upstate Medical University. He served as president and chief executive officer of the former Community General Hospital.
A prelude party will precede the gala, at 7 p.m. The Upstate Gala, to be held from 8 p.m. to midnight, includes a smorgasbord of treats; live, nonstop music by The DeSantis Band and Alibi; casino games; and entertainment provided by an illusionist and a tarot reader.
