Books for kids are helpful when prepping for doctor's visit
Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital Family Resource Center and the hospital's Child Life program have selected ten books that are suitable for reading to children in preparation of a visit to the doctor, or for reading when a family member is ill and needs to go the hospital.
"Books are a great way to open up conversation with children," said Melissa McElroy-Elve, director of the Family Resource Center. "It is always important to read a book yourself before reading it with your child; you can anticipate comments, think of interesting sections or pictures to point out. Whatever the topic, going to the doctor, losing a grandparent or a fun day at the zoo, reading with your child offers a terrific opportunity to share."
The books highlight this month are:
"Let's Talk About When You Have to Have Your Tonsils Out" by Melanie Apel Gordon
"How to Help Children Through a Parent's Serious Illness" by Kathleen McCue
"Big Brother Now, A Story About Me and Our New Baby" by Annette Sheldon
