Leader of Oxford University to visit Upstate Jan. 4, 5

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Andrew D. Hamilton, Ph.D., who as vice chancellor serves as senior officer of the University of Oxford, located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, will visit the Upstate Medical University campus Jan. 4 and 5 to meet with cancer researchers, tour the Cancer Research Institute and deliver two public lectures.

Hamilton, will be the keynote presenter at the President's Forum on International Cancer Research Collaboration, to be held Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 3 p.m. in Medical Alumni Auditorium, Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse.

Hamilton's address, "A World of Impact: International Dimensions of University of Oxford's Biomedical Research," will examine Oxford's robust biomedical research agenda that includes the work of its own Institute of Cancer Research, which is currently conducting large prospective studies of smoking, drinking, diet, obesity, hormone replacement therapy and other avoidable causes of cancer.

Hamilton and Upstate officials also are expected to speak about potential collaborations in cancer research between Upstate and Oxford.

"Upstate is pleased to welcome him to campus and to gain his singular perspective on biomedical research, especially cancer research, and our anticipation of a robust collaboration with Oxford."

On Jan. 5, Hamilton will deliver the inaugural Baldwin Lecture in Cancer Research, named for breast cancer survivor and advocate Carol Baldwin.

Hamilton will present "Synthetic Approaches to Targeting Protein-Protein Interactions Involved in Oncogenisis at noon in the Medical Alumni Auditorium of Weiskotten Hall.

The Baldwin lecture is sponsored jointly by the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the Upstate Cancer Research Institute.

In addition to his presentations, Hamilton will meet with Upstate cancer researchers and tour the Cancer Research Institute.

Hamilton serves as scientific advisor to the Upstate Cancer Research Institute.

Ziwei Huang, Ph.D., professor and chair of the pharmacology department and director of the Upstate Cancer Research Institute, said Dr. Hamilton's visit to campus helps highlight Upstate's cancer research agenda.
