University Hospital receives $40,000 from Hyundai dealers to fund study on longterm health effects of cancer treatments on childhood cancer survivors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — University Hospital will use a $40,000 grant from area Hyundai dealers to fund a study on the longterm health effects of cancer treatments on childhood cancer survivors.

The study will be conducted by Jody Sima, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, who was selected by the car company as one of 31 Hyundai Scholars.

The announcement was made today (Aug. 26) in front of University Hospital, where children of all ages with cancer took part in the Hyundai Hope On Wheels campaign by placing their color handprints on a white Hyundai vehicle.

University Hospital provides extensive cancer treatment for children as inpatients and outpatients through the William Waters Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders, which treats more than 700 children, from the Canadian border to northern Pennsylvania. The center is also a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a national organization of hospitals that specializes in the treatment of childhood malignancies.
