Free health screenings and medical information highlight Upstate's annual State Fair exhibit
SYRACUSE, N.Y. Upstate Medical University will offer free health screenings and health-related information, such as community resources for the uninsured, advances in cancer care and smoking cessation programs, at its New York State Fair exhibit Aug. 27 through Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) in the Science and Industry/Hall of Health Building. Upstate exhibits include:
Aug. 27: Experts from University Hospital's state Designated Stroke Center will offer educational and informational materials. The Smoking Cessation Program will offer pulmonary function and carbon monoxide screenings for smokers and educational and informational materials.
Aug. 28: Upstate's Poison Center will present a poison prevention interactive display and provide educational and informational materials and giveaways. Health Insurance and Financial Services representatives will be available to discuss community resources for the uninsured, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Staff from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will provide educational information regarding outpatient therapy services at University Hospital.
Aug. 29: Health professionals from the Concussion Management Program will offer educational and informational materials and will be available to answer questions about brain injuries. The Pediatric Development Assessment Center will offer educational and informational materials and giveaways. Health Insurance and Financial Services representatives will be available to discuss community resources available to the uninsured, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Aug. 30: Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital exhibit will offer educational and informational materials.
Aug. 31: Experts from the Orthopedics: Bone and Joint Center will offer a "Building Block" activity for children and informational handouts. The New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (NYSOPEP) will offer educational and
informational materials and giveaways. The UpstateDirect (formerly Health Connections) will offer informational handouts regarding UpstateDirect services and giveaways.
Sept. 1: Cardiology staff will offer free blood pressure screening and informational materials about heart disease and other giveaways.
Sept 2: The Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation Program, The McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Site, and Ambulatory Care Services will offer educational and informational materials.
Sept. 3: The Cancer Center will offer educational materials. The Smoking Cessation Program will offer pulmonary function and carbon monoxide screenings for smokers and educational materials. The American Cancer Society will offer educational materials.
Sept. 4: Staff from the Health Sciences Library and Family Resource Center at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital will offer educational and informational materials. Staff from Radiology will offer a presentation showing ultrasound, CT and MRI scan images and offer educational materials. Health Insurance and Financial Services representatives will be available to discuss community resources available to uninsured individuals, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sept. 5: Representatives from the departments of Physical Therapy, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Respiratory Therapy, Physician's Assistant, Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Education from the College of Health Professions will be available for questions. Health Insurance and Financial Services representatives will be available to discuss community resources available to the uninsured, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experts from University Pathology Laboratory Services will offer information about services and draw sites, and giveaways.
Sept. 6: Orthopedics staff will provide bones and surgical hardware educational information. The New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (NYSOPE), and the Adult Emergency Department will offer information handouts. Tobacco users will be invited to participate in an interactive survey at the Public Health and Preventive Medicine exhibit. Participants will be eligible for token gifts and larger prize drawings.
Sept. 7: Representatives from the Public Health and Preventive Medicine program will conduct a survey for smokers.
