SUNY Upstate Medical University announces appointments, honors and awards

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — SUNY Upstate Medical University announces the following appointments, honors and awards:

• SUNY Upstate Medical University and the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network were awarded the Organ Donation Medal of Honor for the second year in a row at the Fourth National Learning Congress, held last fall in Nashville. They received the distinction for their collaborative to achieve a 75 percent organ donation rate for a consecutive 12 month period, from April 4, 2007, to March 31, 2008.

• Robert B. Barlow, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology, has been selected by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) for inclusion in the association's first class of ARVO Fellows. Barlow was named a Silver Fellow (FARVO) for his individual accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the association. Barlow resides in Jamesville.

• Bryant Carruth, M.D., a resident in the Department of Ophthalmology, was elected resident representative to the Executive Council of the Onondaga County Medical Society. Carruth resides in Syracuse.

• Ann E. Barker-Griffith, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology, has been appointed director of the Eye Pathology Lab in the Department of Ophthalmology. Barker-Griffith resides in Jamesville.

• James L. Knoll, IV, MD., published two articles as guest columnist in the November issue of the Journal of Psychiatric Practice. The articles addressed suicide and post hoc psychiatric/psychological assessment of manner of death. Dr. Knoll is director of forensic psychiatry and associate professor of psychiatry. Knoll resides north of Syracuse.

• Rosanne Thomas, an administrative assistant in the Department of Surgery, has achieved a Maintenance of Certification from the National Board for Certification of Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME) programs. Thomas resides in Cicero.

• Theresa Gagnon, R.N., B.S.N., has been named director of the Office of Risk Management after serving as interim director since August 2008. Gagnon joined SUNY Upstate in 1982 and has been member of the Risk Management Department for nearly 20 years. Gagnon resides in Syracuse.

• The Center for Spiritual Care has joined the membership of the Society of Arts in Healthcare through a grant from Advocates for Upstate Medical University.

• The Center for Spiritual Care's pediatric chaplaincy program received a $7,500 grant from the Wilbert Foundation to fund clergy continuing education and support staff Reiki training in pediatric spiritual care. This grant is awarded to only 16 hospitals in the country.

• Sandra St. Germain, R.N., B.S.N., has been appointed as director of utilization management for University Hospital. She also will serve as the liaison between University Hospital and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. St. Germain resides in Brewerton.

• The Pathology Residency Program has been awarded a five-year accreditation through 2013 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The five-year accreditation is the longest accreditation period offered by the ACGME.
