Physician shortage lecture to be held Aug. 28 at SUNY Upstate

Howard Rabinowitz, M.D., Pfizer/American Academy of Family Physicians Visiting Professor in Family Medicine, will present "Increasing the Rural Physician Supply: Three Decades of Success," Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium of Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse. The event is free and open to the public.

Rabinowitz's remarks are especially timely as recent reports show physician shortages in rural areas may become significant over the next several years. Rabinowitz, a member of the medical faculty at Thomas Jefferson University, will discuss how the nationally recognized Physician Shortage Area Program (PSAP) at Jefferson Medical College has been producing physicians for rural Pennsylvania for more than 30 years through a targeted admissions program and an enriched rural curriculum.

The author of more than 50 publications, Rabinowitz is author of "Caring for the Country: Family Doctors in Small Rural Towns," which tells the stories of the lives and work of 10 family doctors caring for rural America, all of whom are graduates of Thomas Jefferson's PSAP.
