SUNY Upstate celebrates Native American Month with events in November

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - SUNY Upstate Medical University will celebrate November as Native American Month with a series events, including talks about traditional medicines, diabetes prevention and lifestyle changes among Indian populations, and presentations of Native American art and dance. All events are free and open to the public.

Below is a listing of upcoming events.

? Opening ceremonies will feature traditional Native American foods and performances by singer Regis Cook of the Mohawk Nation and by the Niagara River Dancers. SUNY Upstate President David R. Smith, M.D., will offer welcoming remarks. Nov. 3, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Institute for Human Performance, 505 Irving Ave., Syracuse.

? Reception and exhibition of Native American art by Tracy Thomas and Oren Lyons and reception. Select pieces will be available for purchase. Nov. 6, 3 to 5 p.m. Health Sciences Library, Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse

? Barbara Johnson of the HIV/AIDS Project of the American Indian Community House will discuss HIV/AIDS in the Native community, from 1 to 2 p.m., and Oneida Nation herbalist Otatdodah Homer will discuss traditional medicines, from 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 8, Medical Alumni Auditorium, Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse.

? A Native American Arts and Crafts Fair will also feature a beadwork demonstration and literature from Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation. Nov. 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Small Cafeteria, second floor, University Hospital, 750 Adams St., Syracuse.

? Darryl Tonemah, Ph.D., interim director of the Health Promotion Programs at the University of Oklahoma, will discuss diabetes prevention and lifestyle changes among Indian populations. Nov. 30, 7:30 a.m. 2231 Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse.

? Closing ceremony will feature presentations by Singer Regis Cook of the Mohawk Nation and a performance by the Niagara River Dancers. Nov. 30, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Campus Activities Building, 155 Elizabeth Blackwell St., Syracuse.

In addition to the public events, SUNY Upstate health professionals will discuss careers in the health professions with Lafayette High School seniors at the high school Nov. 28, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Native American Month activities are sponsored by SUNY Upstate Medical University's Office of Multicultural Resources and Native American Month Planning Committee at SUNY Upstate Medical University in partnership with the Haudenosaunee.
