Hispanic Heritage Month salutes Hispanic healthcare professionals in Central New York

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - SUNY Upstate Medical University and the Spanish Action League will lead the Central New York community in a salute to Hispanic healthcare professionals during Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off Sept. 15.

During opening ceremonies, to be held Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the Institute for Human Performance, 505 Irving Ave., a 5-foot by 7-foot mural honoring Hispanic healthcare employees will be unveiled. Created by Syracuse artist Miguel Mendez, the mosaic mural will be featured at various Hispanic Heritage Month events throughout the community.

"This monthlong celebration will help us recognized the Hispanic healthcare professionals who are working in hospitals, nursing homes, doctors' offices and other healthcare settings throughout Central New York," said Rita Paniagua, assistant director of the Spanish Action League and one of the coordinators of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The month's activities also will be focused on showcasing healthcare careers and medical education to the Hispanic community. "The opportunities for Hispanics who are interested in working in the healthcare community are endless," said Edgar Johnson of SUNY Upstate's Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action.

Highlights of Hispanic Heritage Month include a Health Fair, to be held Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Lucy's Church, 425 Gifford St., Syracuse. Recruiters for nursing and other healthcare positions will be on site as well as representatives of various medical education programs.

On Oct. 12, Maritza Alvardo, M.D., executive director of the Spanish Action League, will deliver a Grand Rounds presentation at 7:30 a.m. It will be followed by a physician, student and employee discussion at 8:30 a.m. and a reception at 9:30 a.m. The presentation will be held in the Doust Board Room on the ninth floor of Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave.
