Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., named CEO of University Hospital

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- SUNY Upstate Medical University has appointed Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., as chief executive officer of University Hospital and senior associate dean for hospital affairs in the College of Medicine. The appointment, effective immediately, was announced today, Jan. 24, by Steven J. Scheinman, M.D., executive vice president and dean of the College of Medicine.

Schaengold, who has served as interim executive director of University Hospital since Jan. 12, 2005, was selected in a nationwide search, conducted by a high-level campus committee and aided by the search firm Spencer Stuart.

In announcing the appointment, Dr. Scheinman said: "We are delighted to be able to keep Phil Schaengold in Central New York as chief executive officer of University Hospital and senior associate dean for hospital affairs in the College of Medicine. Phil has earned the confidence of the broad range of people on campus and in the community. As interim executive director during a time of transition, he led the hospital with strength and clarity. He has established a sense of openness, vision and teamwork that will serve SUNY Upstate well as we craft our new future."

SUNY Upstate Medical University President Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., said Schaengold's appointment as chief executive officer is good news for the entire campus. "Since Phil joined the university last January, he has been a key driver of the university's mission of patient care, research, education," Eastwood said. "We're grateful for his past leadership and look forward to a prosperous future for the hospital under his guidance in the years to come."

"The progress we are making in many areas, such as patient care and employee satisfaction clearly relate to the enthusiasm and dedication of our physicians, nurses and staff and I am grateful for their commitment and support."

Prior to joining University Hospital, Schaengold had been a member of the leadership team of some large health care systems, including Tenet Healthcare Corp. and George Washington University Hospital. He served as a partner with Brightworks Management LLC, a management services company with a particular focus on hospitals, health systems, academic medical centers and large physician groups.

Schaengold holds a juris doctorate from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University (1979), a master's of business administration degree (1975) and a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati (1971).

Schaengold is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Bar Association and the Ohio Bar.
