Patient rooms for CNY Children's Hospital unveiled

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The final design and layout specifications of the patient rooms in the Central New York Children's Hospital are complete and replicas of what the rooms will look like once the projected is completed are now open.


SUNY Upstate's Center for Emergency Preparedness opens alternate emergency department, surge capacity facility at the New York State Fair

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Congressman James T. Walsh and Gov. George E. Pataki will join SUNY Upstate Medical University leadership Thursday, Aug. 25, to open the new Alternate Site for Emergency Department Care at the New York State Fairgrounds that will serve as a national model for medical emergency preparedness. A tour of the facility will take place at 4 p.m. The facility is located behind the Horticulture Building.


SUNY Upstate opens region's first Anxiety and Depressive Disorders Clinic

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - SUNY Upstate Medical University will open the Anxiety and Depressive Disorders Clinic program in September. The program will be the area's first adult one of its kind to offer clinics specializing in treating anxiety, depression, a combination of anxiety and depression, post-partum depression and treatment-resistant depression. Clinics will be located on the first floor of 713 Harrison Street, Syracuse and will be open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The program is available through SUNY Upstate's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.


University Pathologists Laboratories opens new patient service center

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - University Pathologists Laboratories (UPL) has opened its fourth patient service center in the Belgium Meadows Office Park on Route 31 in Baldwinsville, serving physicians and patients in Baldwinsville, Phoenix, Clay, Liverpool and surrounding communities. The patient service center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a. m. to 5 p.m.

Nancy Page of University Hospital selected for national patient safety leadership fellowship

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Nancy Page, R.N., of University Hospital is among 40 healthcare leaders from 27 hospitals and health systems across the United States and Canada to participate in the Fourth Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship class. The fellowship is a yearlong educational program for senior health care leaders to advance the process of creating improved cultures of safety and promoting breakthroughs in patient care.


McCabe to head University Hospital's Hyperbaric Medicine program

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - John McCabe, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, has been named director of University Hospital's Hyperbaric Medicine Services. In addition to McCabe, other faculty members affiliated with Hyperbaric Medicine Services include Peter Mariani, M.D., and Daniel Olsson, M.D. McCabe succeeds by Enrico Camporesi, M.D., who left SUNY Upstate to take a position at the University of Florida.


SUNY Upstate taps Laura Schweitzer, Ph.D., as vice dean of College of Medicine

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Laura Schweitzer, Ph.D., has been named vice dean of the College of Medicine, vice president for academic affairs, and provost-designate at the SUNY Upstate Medical University. In addition, she has been named vice provost for academic affairs and health liaison at Syracuse University. These appointments take effect Oct. 1, 2005, with the appointment as provost at SUNY Upstate effective Oct. 1, 2006.


SUNY Upstate's smoke-free policy takes effect Aug. 1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After 12 months of planning and preparation, SUNY Upstate Medical University officially becomes a smoke-free campus Aug. 1. The term "smoke free" refers to a university policy that prohibits smoking anywhere on campus, be it indoors or outdoors. The policy also prohibits smoking at all university leased or owned facilities, such as University Health Care Center at 90 Presidential Plaza. Previous policy permitted smoking in designated areas.


Military honors University Hospital for medic education program

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - As a precursor to deployment in Iraq, 30 Fort Drum combat medics spent 240 hours this summer observing trauma care in University Hospital's emergency room. This Friday, July 29, Fort Drum officials plan to acknowledge University Hospital for its assistance in making this training possible.
