Patient rooms for CNY Children's Hospital unveiled

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The final design and layout specifications of the patient rooms in the Central New York Children's Hospital are complete and replicas of what the rooms will look like once the projected is completed are now open.

The replica of the pediatric patient room and an intensive care unit room are built and furnished according to the final design specifications for the hospital's vertical expansion. Included in this representation is a hospital corridor complete with caregiver workstation.

The final design of the rooms comes from months of discussions not only with hospital staff, but also with patients and parents, many of who have spent days and weeks in a hospital room. Building the room replicas enabled staff members to see how their ideas were being implemented in the room designs.

The most significant difference from the current patient room is size. The new room is 85 square feet larger and contains only one patient bed, as all rooms are private. The new room comes complete with pullout sofa for overnight family stays, a workstation for computer, private bath and a sink suitable for bathing infants.

Currently, the hospital has invited contractors to bid on the project. A contractor will be awarded following state review of the bid probably in mid-October of early November. The Central New York Children's Hospital will occupy the top two floors of the six-story expansion at University Hospital. Construction is expected to start early next year.
