McCabe to head University Hospital's Hyperbaric Medicine program

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - John McCabe, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, has been named director of University Hospital's Hyperbaric Medicine Services. In addition to McCabe, other faculty members affiliated with Hyperbaric Medicine Services include Peter Mariani, M.D., and Daniel Olsson, M.D. McCabe succeeds by Enrico Camporesi, M.D., who left SUNY Upstate to take a position at the University of Florida.

University Hospital's Hyperbaric Unit sees more than 1,400 patient visits a year. The hyperbaric medicine delivers 100 percent pure oxygen throughout the body to treat a variety of conditions, including, carbon monoxide poisoning; decompression sickness; air or gas embolism; acute anaerobic infections; chronic non-healing wounds; and severe crush injuries, conditions resulting from radiation damage, among others.

University Hospital has one of the few Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy units existing in New York State, and the only unit accredited by the USociety for Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. The unit consists of two monoplace chambers and is used not only to care for critically ill patients (victims suffering from acute intoxication such as carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, and acute anaerobic infections), but also to treat outpatients with chronic wound-healing problems and other ailments. There is also an active hyperbaric research program.
