Anonymous donor leaves $1 million to SUNY Upstate Medical University

SUNY Upstate Medical University has received its largest individual philanthropic gift ever - a $1 million bequest to the Medical Alumni Association from an alumnus who wishes to remain anonymous. The contribution is earmarked for medical student scholarships.


University Hospital outpatient entrance to close for renovation June 28

Beginning June 28, University Hospital's outpatient entrance will close for approximately five weeks to undergo modifications as it will temporarily serve as the hospital's main entrance during the construction of a new and expanded hospital lobby, slated to begin later this summer.


Area traffic restrictions in place June through September

The northbound lane of Sarah Loguen Street between E. Adams Street and the entrance to the parking garage will be closed to traffic for three months beginning Monday, June 21, to accommodate construction of the new parking garage. During this time, turning left from East Adams Street on to Sarah Loguen Street will not be permitted. Access to the Sarah Loguen Street parking garage will only be available via Harrison Street.


Patricia Numann, M.D., named to the International Women in Medicine Hall of Fame

Patricia J. Numann, M.D., the Lloyd S. Rogers Professor of Surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University and medical director of University Hospital, has been named to the International Women in Medicine Hall of Fame. A formal induction ceremony will take place June 25 in Washington, D.C.


East Syracuse couple raises $12,620 for Children's Hospital at University Hospital

By asking area businesses, friends, neighbors and coworkers and by holding a three-day garage sale, Linda and Floyd Miller of East Syracuse raised over $12,000 for the Central New York Children's Hospital at University Hospital. The Millers raised the money as part of the Miracle Ride, an annual motorcycle rally that benefits the Children's Miracle Network and this year supported the Central New York Children's Hospital at University Hospital. The Millers, who are members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, participated in the May 16 rally around Oneida Lake rally.


Nearly 400 cancer survivors will gather to celebrate life at University Hospital's cancer survivors day June 13

Nearly 400 cancer survivors and their families are expected to attend the National Cancer Survivors Day celebration Sunday, June 13, at the Holiday Inn on Electronics Parkway in Liverpool. The event, which runs from 1 to 4 p.m., will feature a buffet lunch and musical performances.

SUNY Upstate launches clinical trial testing brain cancer drug

SUNY Upstate Medical University is one of 21 sites in the United States to test an experimental brain cancer drug that uses diphtheria toxin to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells.


University Hospital departments win honors and accreditation

The Ultrasound Section of University Hospital's Department of Radiology has received a three-year accreditation for gynecological, general and vascular ultrasound services, including abdominal vascular, following a recent survey by the American College of Radiology. The Ultrasound Section scored 100 percent in all categories. Accreditation is given to facilities for achieving high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of its practice, qualifications of personnel and adequacy of equipment.
