SUNY Upstate Medical University and Syracuse VA Medical Center partner to develop a center to aid veterans with mental disorders

U.S. Rep Jim Walsh and Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi today (Oct. 28) announced the awarding of a $9 million research grant to the VA Healthcare Network Upstate New York (VISN 2) for the establishment of a Center for Integrated Healthcare for veterans with mental disorders at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. The grant, $1.8 million a year for the next five years, will enable the Syracuse VA to create a first-of-its-kind research program in conjunction with SUNY Upstate Medical University to provide area veterans with improved access and quality of mental health services in primary care settings.


Sale of holiday greeting cards designed by children, families to benefit University Hospital's pediatric cancer services

The sale of holiday greeting cards created by Central New York children who have cancer or a blood disorder will benefit the Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders at University Hospital. This is the ninth consecutive year that patients from the center have designed greeting cards for the fundraiser. Since 1996 nearly $50,000 has been raised by the card sale.


Exhibition of work by local artist opens at SUNY Upstate Nov. 1

An exhibition of work by local artist Joan Applebaum will be on display Nov. 1 through Dec. 3 at the gallery in the Health Sciences Library at SUNY Upstate Medical University, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

SUNY Upstate Medical University has opened the region's first comprehensive sports concussion center, located in the Institute for Human Performance, 505 Irving Ave., Syracuse.


U.S. Deputy Surgeon General to speak about organ donation Oct. 26 at SUNY Upstate conference

The U.S. Deputy Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Kenneth P. Moritsugu, M.D., whose wife and daughter became organ donors after being killed in separate car accidents four years apart, will speak on organ donation to an audience of critical care nurses Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse.


Smucny named interim chair of SUNY Upstate family medicine department

John J. Smucny, M.D., associate professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, has been appointed interim chairman of SUNY Upstate's Department of Family Medicine. Smucny succeeds Lorne Becker, M.D., who headed the Department of Family Medicine since 1995.


Book to offer practical, spiritual help to parents with hospitalized children

Outpatient children's cancer center renamed for noted Syracuse physician

The outpatient clinic of the Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders at University Hospital has been renamed in honor of William J. Waters, M.D., one of the first Syracuse area physicians to specialize in treating children with cancer and blood disorders.
