University Hospital's Living Donor Support Group was featured in the Post-Standard March 21. The article contains vignettes of the various experiences of several kidney donors. Ellen Havens of the Transplant Center reported that four living donors had already donated kidneys at the hospital this year and that one donor a week is scheduled for surgery at the hospital for the next two months.

University Hospital to begin accepting autologous blood donations April 1

Authorization from the New York State Health Department will allow University Hospital surgery patients to make an autologous blood donation at the hospital in advance of their surgery, effective April 1. Prior to this authorization, patients were required to donate their autologous unit at the Red Cross. The Red Cross continues to accept autologous blood donations.


SUNY Upstate to participate in national study on best treatments for Type 2 diabetes in youth

SUNY Upstate Medical University has been selected as one of 12 sites in the United States to participate in a national study to find the best treatment for type 2 diabetes in children and teens. The announcement of the national study was made today (March 15) by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson.

Thompson named director of diversity and affirmative action

Maxine Summerhill Thompson, MSW, CSW, has been named director of diversity and affirmative action at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She formerly served as SUNY Upstate's associate director of social work, a position she has held since 1983. She has also served as the chairperson of the Employee Assistance Program and as a member of the Ethics Committee.


Experts to offer ways to move scientific breakthroughs to the marketplace

Experts from various agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute, will discuss how to move basic science breakthroughs more quickly into product development and ultimately, the marketplace at a daylong conference "Translating Discovery into Clinical Practice" March 19 at the Marx Hotel and Conference Center, 701 E. Genesee Street. The conference, sponsored by Upstate Medical University runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
