National Book Award finalist to discuss changes in public health May 1

Devra Lee Davis, M.P.H., Ph.D, a 2002 National Book Award finalist for her work "When Smoke Ran Like Water," will discuss the need to change current approaches to public health at a free, public lecture Thursday, May 1, at noon in the Weiskotten Hall Ninth Floor auditorium, 766 Irving Avenue, Syracuse. The lecture is co-sponsored by the CNY Occupational Health Clinical Center, SUNY Upstate Medical University's Chapter of the American Medical Students Association and SUNY ESF's Women's Caucas. Copies of Davis's book will be available for purchase and signing following the lecture.
SUNY Upstate researchers awarded $100,000 from the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund

Researchers at SUNY Upstate Medical University have been awarded two grants totaling $100,000 from the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of Central New York Inc. An additional $50,000 grant will endow a lectureship named for Carol Baldwin, a breast cancer survivor. The research grants are named for area women who have died from breast cancer.
SUNY Upstate finds conclusive evidence of link between clubfoot and a missing key leg artery

Researchers at SUNY Upstate Medical University say they now have found definitive proof of a link between clubfoot, a congenital deformity, and the absence of major artery in the leg. The study is published in the January issue of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics.
Cardella elected to national radiation protection council

John F. Cardella, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Radiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, was elected to the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP). This organization is responsible for measuring and monitoring radiation exposure to the U.S. population, both from occupational, environmental, and medical exposures.
Marshall to head Upstate Medical University's health professions and nursing alumni associations

Andrea Marshall has been named director of health professions and nursing alumni associations at Upstate Medical University. The two organizations represent over 5,000 of the College of Health Professions and the College of Nursing, two of four colleges at Upstate Medical University.
Frankenstein exhibition opens at SUNY Upstate April 2

A traveling exhibition featuring photos of artifacts and other oddities surrounding one of the most enduring myths of the Western world -- Mary Shelley's Frankenstein -- will begin a six-week stay at SUNY Upstate Medical University April 2. The free exhibition will be on display through May 16, in the university's Health Sciences Library, located in Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Avenue, Syracuse.
SUNY Upstate students get matched with residencies on national Match Day

City, county leaders to proclaim March as Poison Prevention Month

Onondaga County Executive Nicholas Pirro and Syracuse Mayor Matthew Driscoll will sign a proclamation Wednesday, March 19, acknowledging March as Poison Prevention Month. The 10 a.m. ceremony will take place in the County Executive's Office in the John Mulroy Civic Center.
