SUNY Upstate launches fundraising campaign for children's hospital

SUNY Upstate Medical University officially launched the fundraising campaign for the Central New York Children's Hospital by announcing that $5.6 million toward the $15 million goal has already been raised.

The announcement was made by Mary Ann Shaw, chair of the Central New York Children's Hospital Campaign Committee, at SUNY Upstate's black-tie gala Dec. 12 at the OnCenter.

"Community support for the children's hospital is extremely high," said Shaw. "We see evidence of that in the generous financial support the project has already received."

The $5.6 million represents money raised from SUNY Upstate employees, local physicians, the Children's Miracle Network and various corporations and foundations. Community support will be used to help furnish the children's hospital with patient and family amenities and special medical equipment. Money will also be earmarked for research and teaching pediatric medicine.

The Central New York Children's Hospital will be part of a $99 million, six-story addition to University Hospital. The children's hospital, which will have its own entrance, will feature 50 private patient rooms, family sleep and dining as well as playrooms and a family resource center. It will also will have its own entrance. It is expected to open by December 2007.
