Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Upstate launch bachelor's degree program
Two SUNY colleges have launched a new program to provide part-time, bachelor degree education to respiratory therapists in the Albany region.
This distance learning collaboration between SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and Hudson Valley Community College is the only such baccalaureate program in the region. It is offered part-time to allow students to continue to work while they pursue their degree. Through this program, students can spread the work over five years.
The program is especially designed to build on the existing skills of respiratory therapists and to help them obtain meaningful further education. Therapists learn the latest techniques to prepare for further clinical responsibilities, as well as obtain the skills for leadership, teaching and supervisory roles. Further on-the-job benefits include more clinical exposure to areas not typically covered in associate degree coursework, such as neonatal pediatric care and cardiopulmonary rehab.
The spring semester begins on Jan. 5 and applications for these courses are due Dec. 10. For more information, contact Joseph J. Morfei, chair of Respiratory Therapy, SUNY Upstate Medical University, 315-464-5580.
