SUNY Upstate professor wins Young Investigator Award

Paul Klawitter, M.D, Ph.D., assistant professor of emergency medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University, has been honored with the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. The award was presented to Klawitter at the SAEM's annual meeting in May.

The award honors individuals who show promise and distinction in their emergency medicine research career and who have demonstrated commitment to research as evidenced by their academic achievements and qualifications.

Klawitter, who earned his medical degree in 1993 from SUNY Upstate and his doctoral degree from Ohio State University in 2002, has had his research published in the American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of Critical Care and has been awarded research grants from the American Lung Association and the National Institutes of Health. He is the author of a chapter in the "Handbook of Cardiovascular Emergencies" (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2001).

Prior to joining the SUNY Upstate faculty, Klawitter served as assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Ohio State University, where he also served as a research fellow.

The SAEM honor is one of several he has received in recent years. Others include the NIH National Reserch Service Award (2000), Ohio State University Woody Hayes Award for Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine (2000) and the Ohio State Department of Emergency Medicine Fellow of the Year (1999).
