Pediatric Nephrology Clinic will open in Binghamton

Parents with children in need of a pediatric kidney specialist will no longer have to leave town to seek this specialized care. Thomas Welch, M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, will open a Pediatric Nephrology Clinic at Binghamton General Hospital this month.

The Pediatric Nephrology Clinic will offer medical consultation evaluation and follow up with children and adolescents with disorders of the kidney and urinary tract, including hypertension. The clinic will see patients from 1 to 5 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. The clinic's phone number is 607-762-2468.

Welch, who joined SUNY Upstate in July 2001, served as director of nephrology and hypertension at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati and a professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. A native of Herkimer, N.Y., Welch was a pediatrician at Herkimer Memorial Hospital from 1976 to 1982 and served as medical staff president there from 1979 to 1981. He served as clinical instructor from 1976 to 1982 at SUNY Upstate Medical University, before joining the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati in 1983.
