Anthony Andrews, M.D., joins University Center for Vision Care at SUNY Upstate
Anthony Andrews, M.D., a board certified ophthalmologist, has joined SUNY Upstate Medical University as chief of the retina division and an assistant professor of ophthalmology. Andrews will practice at SUNY Upstate's University Center for Vision Care, specializing in complete retinal care and surgery. His area of expertise includes all accepted laser procedures for diabetes and age-related macular degeneration.
Prior to joining SUNY Upstate, Andrews was chief of the retina department at SUNY Downstate at Brooklyn, an assistant professor of ophthalmology and director of SUNY Downstate's Retinal-Vascular Center. He was the first retina surgeon in Brooklyn to perform sutureless vitrectomy surgery. At one point, he was responsible for all of the retina surgery at four Brooklyn hospitals, including SUNY Downstateone of the top five institutions in the country for vitrectomies to correct scarring and deposits of fibrous material caused by diabetes mellitus.
A resident of Manlius, Andrews earned a bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Yale University in 1989 and his medical degree from Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1993. He completed a two-year medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship in 1999 at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Schepens Retina Associates.
