Regional Perinatal Center receives accreditation for ultrasound practice

The Regional Perinatal Center, which specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies, has received accreditation for its ultrasound practice by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

The center, located at University Health Care Center, 90 Presidential Plaza in Syracuse, cares for more than 2,500 expectant mothers a year.

The accreditation recognizes the center's ability to meet standards set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession in the areas of personnel, facilities, documentation, storage and record-keeping practices, polices and procedures and quality assurance methods.

Robert Silverman, M.D., medical director of the Regional Perinatal Center, said the accreditation is significant in that it shows patients and referring physicians that the center is making an extra effort to ensure that services provided are of the highest quality. "By achieving AIUM Ultrasound Practice Accreditation, we are committed to providing high-quality diagnostic ultrasound services," he said.

Ultrasound is an essential diagnostic tool for assessing maternal and fetal conditions that may complicate a patient's pregnancy. Ultrasound images aid in the management of the pregnancy and delivery.

The AIUM developed the accreditation program partly in response to the increased scrutiny of diagnostic evaluations.
