New York City poison expert to discuss treatments for deadly poisons at SUNY Upstate Conference Oct. 30

Maria Mercurio-Zapalla will deliver the SUNY Upstate Medical University Howard L. Weinberger, M.D., Annual Toxicology Lecture "Why are Poisons Deadly and What are Some Common Treatments" at the Sixth Annual Toxicology Teaching Day Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center, Syracuse.

Mercurio-Zapalla is managing director of the New York City Poison Control Center at Bellevue Hospital Center. The program is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care providers who routinely care for poisoned patients.

The Teaching Day will assist health care providers to identify the initial steps required in the evaluation of poisoned patients, name the toxidromes in the diagnosis and antidotes in the management of the poisoned patient, and identify life-threatening toxic induced causes of hyperthermia and toxins.

Mercurio-Zapalla will be joined in the program by local healthcare professionals who specialize in the care and treatment of poisoned patients.
