Oswego couple creates endowment for needy cancer patients

A year ago, Charlie and Mary Haney gave a $5,000 gift to the Oswego Hematology/Oncology office in honor of their doctor, Jonathan Wright, M.D., and the office staff. Little did they know that the donation, used to assist needy patients at the medical office, would inspire others to contribute as well.

The Haneys, of County Route 57 in Oswego, are moved by the response of family members, friends and the Oswego community to the Mary and Charlie Haney Cancer Giving Fund. They now plan to endow the fund, which has more than doubled in size.

"Over the last year, several cancer patients have benefited from fund monies, primarily needed for medication but also for other expenses related to their treatment," said Charlie Haney. "It is time to ensure that this source of financial assistance is available for future generations of patients. By establishing this endowment, we are creating a fund that will be available in perpetuity."

Contributions have come from a variety of sources, including some from as far away as Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Illinois. However, it is the hometown effort that most amazes the Haneys. The fund has received donations from Kingsford Park Elementary School, Minetto Elementary School, the "Encouragers" breast cancer survivors support group, The Hairport, and various departments within Oswego Hospital.

The hematology/oncology office is located at 140 W. 6th St., Oswego. According to Wright, over 200 new patients are seen each year and follow-up visits total over 5,000 annually.
