Local activities highlight Poison Prevention Week March 17 to 23

Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll and County Executive Nicholas Pirro will sign a proclamation Thursday, March 21 acknowledging the third week in March as Poison Prevention Week. The 10 a.m. ceremony, to take place in the Mayor's Office in City Hall, will feature a performance by Cathedral School students who will sign the jingle for the new poison information hotline.

In January, a new nationwide toll-free phone number, 1-800-222-1222, went into effect for poison centers across the country, including the Central New York Poison Center.

Other events slated for Poison Prevention Week include a Poison Awareness Day at the Rosamund Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park March 23. Central New York Poison Center representatives will be available from 9 to 11:30 a.m. to discuss poison safety issues and answer questions.

In Oswego County, the Central New York Poison Center will present an award to the Children's Board of Oswego in recognition of its poison prevention efforts. The award ceremony will take place March 19 at 2:15 p.m. at Kingsford Park Elementary School at W. 5th and Niagara streets. Other organizations being recognized are Oswego County BOCES, the City of Oswego, Oswego County Health Department, Oswego City School District, Oswego County Cooperative Extension, Oswego Hospital and the Oswego School Nurse/Teacher Association.
