Hospital's OASIS program introduces Life Story Legacies

Just in time for the holidays, OASIS has introduced its new Life Story Legacies program. According to OASIS Program Coordinator Chris Sheridan, Life Story Legacies offers Central New Yorkers aged 50 or older the opportunity to give a unique gift that no one else can give a videotape or audiotape of their personal history for their families to share for generations.

Prior to the taping session, participants receive an outline to help them organize their thoughts and to jog their memory. Memorabilia, such as old pictures or a special gift is welcome and help to visually communicate a life story.

"Our trained OASIS volunteers guide participants through the interview process, and help them to relate their personal history in a comfortable, quiet setting," said Sheridan. "The recording session usually lasts from one to two hours and individuals may have more than one session if requested."

Everything on the videotape is confidential. The videotape is immediately available at the conclusion of the interview. The program fee is $20 for a videotaped session or $10 for an audio-only session.

OASIS is sponsored locally by University Hospital and Kaufmann's Department Store. It is affiliated with the OASIS Institute, a national education organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for mature adults. Life Story Legacies is made possible by funding from Advocates for Upstate Medical University.
