SUNY Upstate symposium explores ethical issues related to medical advertising Oct. 17
The advertising of prescription drugs and other medications and its impact on the public's view on dispensation of medication and the treatment of illness will be explored at the ninth annual President's Ethics Symposium, "Marketing Medicines: Help or Harm," Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium of Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
"Marketing Medicines: Help or Harm" will include a video presentation featuring actual medical advertising, expert speakers and audience discussion. A poster exhibit featuring medical advertising will be held outside the auditorium.
In addition to a dramatized event, expert speakers will explore the ethical aspects of medical advertising. From SUNY Upstate, speakers include: Peg Braungart, Ph.D., professor in the Center for Bioethics and Humanities; Eric v.d. Luft, Ph.D., curator of historical collections at Health Sciences Library; Wendy S. A. Edwards, M.D.; faculty scholar in the Center for Bioethics and Humanitites and professor of medicine; Priscilla S. Worral, Ph.D., RN, coordinator for nursing research; and Sam Gorovitz, Ph.D., the Dearing-Daly Professor in Center for Bioethics and Humanities. Also participating is Beth Barnes, Ph.D., an assistant dean at Syracuse University.
