Thomas Donovan named chief financial officer of University Hospital

Thomas J. (T.J.) Donovan has been named chief financial officer of University Hospital of SUNY Upstate Medical University. The appointment was made by Ben Moore, executive director of University Hospital. Donovan had served as interim chief financial officer since September 1999. As the hospital's top financial executive, Donovan is responsible for overall direction of activities such as budgeting, general accounting, third-party reimbursement and hospital business office operations. In addition, he works with senior management to establish fiscal guidelines, policies and procedures for University Hospital. Donovan has held numerous positions, including director of patient financial services and accounting and reimbursement manager, since his service with University Hospital began in 1981. The 350-bed University Hospital is Central New York's tertiary care center and the area's only Level 1 trauma center. The facility recorded more than 100,000 patient days and more than 250,000 outpatient visits in the past year. The hospital is the primary teaching site for SUNY Upstate's four colleges. Donovan is a graduate of LeMoyne College and an advanced member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, Central New York Chapter. Donovan resides in Westvale, a westside Syracuse suburb, with wife, Diane, and daugther, Kirsi.


SUNY Upstate and Columbia University partner on $28 million federal grant to use telemedicine to serve New York residents with diabetes

Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and SUNY Upstate Medical University have received a $28 million grant from the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) to bring health care into the homes of underserved rural and inner-city residents with diabetes through the largest telemedicine effort ever funded by the federal government. Columbia and SUNY Upstate join five other sites in the effort, called the Informatics for Diabetes Education and Telemedicine (IDEATel), which will serve as test bed for the national use of internet technology and advanced networks to increase access to healthcare for all Americans. The demonstration project will be a model to develop more effective treatments for other diseases such as depression, obesity, asthma and heart failure.


Upstate Medical University celebrates Match Day 2000

At noon on Thursday, March 16, 150 fourth-year students from SUNY Upstate Medical University's College of Medicine joined 33,528 medical students from across the country in learning where they will spend their first year of training (or residency) in their chosen specialty.


SUNY Upstate Medical University to teach future doctors how to improve communication about spiritual issues

Upstate Medical University of the State University of New York will introduce a new curriculum on spirituality next fall in the College of Medicine that will provide students with a greater understanding of the role of spirituality and its meaning in patients' lives. The curriculum also will examine how spirituality may affect healthcare decisions.

The open house, sponsored by the College of Health Professions and the Office of Student Admissions, offers high school and college students, parents, counselors, teachers and others opportunities to learn more about seven key health fields: Cardiovascular Perfusion, Cytotechnology, Medical Imaging Sciences, Medical Technology, Physical Therapy and Radiation Therapy Technology.


Prevention magazine food editor to offer healthy eating tips and demonstrate recipes at University Hospital March 3

Regina Ragone, food editor for Prevention magazine, will offer healthy eating tips during a presentation and food demonstration Friday, March 3 from noon to 1 p.m. in the second floor cafeteria of University Hospital, 750 E. Adams St. Ragone will also present that afternoon, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Wegman's in DeWitt. All presentations are free and open to the public.
