As administrator, Benedict's responsibilities include advising Health Science Center faculty in research protocol preparation and reviewing and editing IRB protocols. Benedict, who replaces recently-retired Linda Kaufman, reports to John Lucas, Ph.D., Vice Provost for Research.

From 1995 to 1998, Benedict served the Health Science Center as a gynecologic oncology nurse and research administrator for the Center's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her clinical nursing responsibilities included the overall management of patients within the Division and coordinating patient care within and outside of Onondaga County.

In 1997, Benedict was an auditing team member for the Gynecologic Oncology Group, a national cooperative research group funded by the National Cancer Institute. In this role, she visited institutions receiving federal funds through the Group to insure proper compliance with federal regulations concerning research practices, including review of consent forms, adherence to protocol procedures and compliance with IRB regulations. Benedict, a resident of Syracuse's east side, received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Syracuse University in 1984. She is a licensed registered nurse.

The Research Development Office (RDO) provides support and oversight to the Health Science Center faculty in their research and grant application efforts. In addition to administering the IRB, the office also provides oversight to the Committee for the Humane Use of Animals (CHUA), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBO), and the Radiation Safety Committee.
