Presentation on local responses to antisemitism and hate is Sept. 30

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in conjunction with the Jewish Federation of Central New York, will sponsor Updates on Local Responses to Antisemitism and Hate: Safety Protocols in the CNY Jewish Community by Susan DeMari, JD, director of Community Security for the Central and Western NY Jewish Communities, Monday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in 103 Weiskotten Hall. The event is open to the Upstate community and will require ID for entry.

Interfaith service of prayer and reflection is Oct. 22

The Office of Spiritual Care will offer a brief service of prayer, reflection and song to bring us together in growing compassion for ourselves, one another, our patients and our community Oct. 22 at noon in the Interfaith Chapel of Upstate University Hospital. The interfaith service Light in Times of Darkness: Finding our way together comes during National Spiritual Care Week October 20 to 26.  Additional details to follow.

Event to benefit Upstate nursing students is Sept. 30

Upstate’s Nursing Alumni Association will host an event Monday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. at Harvey’s Garden (1200 E. Water St., Syracuse) to benefit nursing scholarships at Upstate’s College of Nursing. For more information, email [email protected].

Workshop on how to take patient history in Spanish is Oct. 1

Keila Muñiz, MD, St. Joseph’s Hospital, will discuss how to take a patient’s medical history in Spanish and the ways culture and language play a role in the exam room Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in 1507/1508 Setnor. The workshop is part of Upstate’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and is hosted by Upstate’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; the Latino Medical Student Association; and the Migrant Health Workers Club. Schwartz Rounds is Oct. 1

Schwartz Rounds will be held Tuesday, Oct. 1 at noon in room 0124 at Community. Panelists will discuss Healing the Healer—Balancing and Navigating Self-Care with Patient Care. Emotional exhaustion, burnout, setting boundaries, mindfulness will all be discussed. Schwartz Rounds is open to staff of all departments and is intended to support the work we do by offering a compassionate listening environment. 1 CE hour for participants. Questions? Upstate’s Employee Assistance Program will host Chill Out Oct. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. in room A and B at the Institute of Human Performance and Oct. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the theater on the second floor of Nappi Wellness Institute. Biotech Equity Research session is Oct. 3

Benjamin J. Burnett, PhD, managing director of equity research at Stifel Investment Services will present Biotech Equity Research: Tracking the Promise (and Risk) of Early-Stage Companies Navigating the Public Markets Oct. 3 from 3 to 4 p.m. via Zoom. The intersection of early-stage life science companies and finance will be discussed. Also covered will be: recent capital market trends and forecasts, timing the market, and what it takes to become (and be) a public company. Balancing innovation with capital needs requires a good understanding of how and when to access capital, and whether this is more easily done as a private or public company.
