Employee/Student Health will hold flu and Covid vaccine clinics, as there is an expected increase in cases this fall and winter. Influenza vaccine and an updated 2024/25 Moderna Spikevax Covid vaccine will be offered. The schedule is as follows:

Flu and Covid vaccines are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. For those in clinical areas, the NYS health code requires a mask to be worn during flu season if you do not receive the flu vaccine.

Clark Burn Center Trivia Night is Sept. 20
Clark Burn Center will host Trivia Night Sept. 20 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Crazy Daisies. The event includes trivia, raffle baskets, and prizes for best theme/costume and the top winning teams. Global Health available to enroll staff and answer questions about new Covid study Sept. 20, 23, and 27
Upstate Global Health Institute will conduct a study to define the incidence and clinical spectrum of Covid-19 in a group of healthcare workers over a period of one respiratory virus season—fall and winter. The study will characterize who gets sick, how long illness lasts, and how long others could be infected. The study will also look at responses to vaccination. The study is open to all Upstate staff and will conclude June 2025. For more information, email [email protected].

Annual Walk Run for Kids is Sept. 21
The fourth annual Walk Run for Kids, hosted by the Upstate Foundation, will take place Sept. 21 at 9 a.m. at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. Proceeds benefit Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. The event, which is an opportunity to support the many Southern Tier families who rely on Upstate for care, features a USATF-certified 5K run, 2-mile walk, and a fun run for kids. It will be held rain or shine. Adults can receive a $5 discount on the registration fee with the code 5FORKIDS. There will be a bicycle helmet giveaway and fitting for participating children while supplies last (children must be present for the fitting). Matthews Auto Walkathon is Oct. 5
The sixth annual Matthews Auto Walkathon will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 virtually and in person from sunup to sundown at the Rail Trail in Vestal. The event benefits children’s charities, including Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Participants located in the Syracuse area are welcome to walk at any park or neighborhood. Upstate’s Endocrine Research Team seeks healthy participants ages 45 to 65 with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2 for a one-time blood draw (https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm). To be eligible, participants cannot have diabetes, sleep apnea, or be taking any diabetes or weight loss medications (such as Ozempic/Wegovy). Older adults and stroke survivors sought for study
Bokkyu Kim, PT, PhD, associate professor of Physical Therapy Education at the College of Health Professions, is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate whether transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) therapy using near-infrared light can modulate brain activity to improve arm and hand motor function in chronic stroke survivors. Healthy older adults and stroke survivors are sought to participate in this study. The lab is located in the Institute for Human Performance, and parking is free. Questions about the study? - Explaining the running of the Family Birth Center and why it has a “baby-friendly” designation are nurses Lindsay Miner and Julie Moore.
- Researcher Saravanan Thangamani, PhD, discusses how different types of ticks, such as dog ticks and lone star ticks, have migrated to Central New York and how to avoid the diseases they can bring.
- Thangamani, in a separate interview, also talks about two mosquito-borne illnesses, West Nile virus and eastern equine encephalitis, and how to minimize the risk of infection.
