Parent Resources series offers session on Reiki Sept. 11

Chelsea Torres, OTRL, will present The Fundamentals of Reiki during the HealthLink Parent Resources session Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at HealthLink (6333 Rt. 298 E. Syracuse) and via Zoom. Sessions are open to all parents, caregivers, and those interested in the topic. The monthly parent support group will follow the session, in-person only. Note: This confidential support group is intended for those who have experienced nonviolent domestic abuse. This can include behaviors that frighten, intimidate, humiliate, or blame someone. Environmental Services Week runs now through Sept. 13

Environmental Services (EVS) Week runs now through Sept. 13. Upstate currently employs 292 EVS staff who work in 30 buildings across the Upstate campus. In the complex hospital, learning, administrative, research, and clinical environments, Upstate depends heavily on the EVS team. Take time to acknowledge and thank EVS technicians for their extraordinary contribution to our many successes.

Global Health available to enroll staff and answer questions about new Covid study Sept. 13, 17, 20, 23, and 27

Upstate Global Health Institute will conduct a study to define the incidence and clinical spectrum of Covid-19 in a group of healthcare workers over a period of one respiratory virus season—fall and winter. The study will characterize who gets sick, how long illness lasts, and how long others could be infected. The study will also look at responses to vaccination. The study is open to all Upstate staff and will conclude June 2025. For more information, email [email protected].

Walk with a Doc is Sept. 14

Kaushal Nanavati, MD, Upstate’s wellness dean and medical director of Integrative Therapy, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. at Onondaga Lake Park. Meet by the skate park. The event begins with a brief talk followed by a walk. Dr. Nanavati’s topic is Walk This Way: From Knowing to Doing—Transform Your Life. Fourth annual Ruari Sparkle Tutu Trot is Sept. 15

The fourth annual Ruari Sparkle Tutu Trot will be held Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Yawger Brook Catering and Campground, 989 Chamberlain Road, Auburn. Proceeds benefit the Ruari Sparkle Parking Fund and Ruari Sparkle Comfort Fund at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital. In 2023, the funds paid for parking and meals for 600 families. Convocation is Sept. 18

Upstate’s Fall Faculty Convocation will be held Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium at Weiskotten Hall. A reception will follow in the courtyard. Upstate will recognize the academic and professional contributions of 25 individuals, including newly elected members of the Academy of Upstate Educators, 13 President’s awardees, four Chancellor’s awardees, three members who have achieved the Distinguished Professor rank, and two awards for philanthropic excellence. The Upstate community is invited to attend this celebration of achievements that contribute to the academic success of our students, the quality care of our patients, and advancing biomedical research. Clark Burn Center Trivia Night is Sept. 20 

Clark Burn Center will host Trivia Night Sept. 20 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Crazy Daisies. The event includes trivia, raffle baskets, and prizes for best theme/costume and the top winning teams. Annual Walk Run for Kids is Sept. 21

The fourth annual Walk Run for Kids, hosted by the Upstate Foundation, will take place Sept. 21 at 9 a.m. at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. Proceeds benefit Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. The event, which is an opportunity to support the many Southern Tier families who rely on Upstate for care, features a USATF-certified 5K run, 2-mile walk, and a fun run for kids. It will be held rain or shine. Adults can receive a $5 discount on the registration fee with the code 5FORKIDS. Alan W. Rothschild Innovation Award event is Oct. 27

The Alan W. Participants sought to help with Lyme disease blood test study

Participants are sought help with a study to determine if an investigational new blood test, called Liaison LymeDetect, can detect the germ that causes Lyme disease sooner than conventional diagnostic tests. Current blood tests for Lyme disease can sometimes fail to confirm the illness during early infection. Global Health seeks participants age 7 and older who have been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease or are suspected by a practitioner to have Lyme disease and have developed a rash. NYS Office of Mental Health offers wellness groups

The New York State Office of Mental Health offers all employees an opportunity to practice various coping skills and strengthen their resilience through wellness groups. Group sessions offer a warm, inviting space that fosters relaxation virtually and provides examples of calming techniques and basic coping skills. The group sessions are free, confidential, anonymous, and virtual employees can call in from any phone. Group sessions include: Monday Meditation, Mindful Mondays, Taking Care of Mind and Body, and Tending to Self. A Breath-Body-Mind (BBM) class is held every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Spanish.
