Travel Office updates on relocation, travel cards, and RF reimbursement
- The Travel Office will relocate to 5784 Widewaters Parkway today, Aug. 29. There will be limited availability during move day.
- Staff from the Travel Office will distribute travel cards to those who have not yet picked up their cards Sept. 4 from 11 a.m. to noon outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital.

Deadline for Emerging Leaders United scholarship applications is Aug. 30
Upstate employees are welcome to apply for a scholarship for Upstate’s chapter of Emerging Leaders United, an affinity group with United Way of Central New York. Participants of the Emerging Leaders program will represent Upstate Medical University and have the opportunity to attend leadership and community education programs, volunteer events, and network with leaders from Syracuse businesses. Parent Resources series offers session on Reiki Sept. 11
Chelsea Torres, OTRL, will present The Fundamentals of Reiki during the HealthLink Parent Resources session Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at HealthLink (6333 Rt. 298 E. Syracuse) and via Zoom. Sessions are open to all parents, caregivers, and those interested in the topic.

Walk with a Doc is Sept. 14
Kaushal Nanavati, MD, Upstate’s wellness dean and medical director of Integrative Therapy, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. at Onondaga Lake Park. Meet by the skate park. The event begins with a brief talk followed by a walk.
Dr. Nanavati’s topic is Walk This Way: From Knowing to Doing—Transform Your Life. Participants can walk at their own pace and distance. The event is free and open to the public. Convocation is Sept. 18
Upstate’s Fall Faculty Convocation will be held Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium at Weiskotten Hall. A reception will follow in the courtyard. Upstate will recognize the academic and professional contributions of 25 individuals, including newly elected members of the Academy of Upstate Educators, 13 President’s awardees, four Chancellor’s awardees, three members who have achieved the Distinguished Professor rank, and two awards for philanthropic excellence.
The Upstate community is invited to attend this celebration of achievements that contribute to the academic success of our students, the quality care of our patients, and advancing biomedical research. The Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Summit will be held Sept. 19 and 20 at the CNY Biotech Accelerator. The event is hosted by the Upstate Global Health Institute and the Central New York Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Alliance. Healthcare practitioners are welcome to attend. Upstate Mental Health REACH workshop is Oct. 19
The Upstate Mental Health REACH educational program will host a workshop Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown. Speakers from Upstate Psychiatry include: Thomas Schwartz, MD; Nevena Radonjic, MD, PhD; Rachael Kuch Cecconi, MD; Zsuzsa Meszaros, MD, PhD; and Tolani Ajagbe, MD. Topics include: SSRIs and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression, psych meds and psychotherapy in primary care, managing alcohol use disorder, and medications for opioid use disorder. Curling event to benefit Upstate’s Joslin Diabetes Center will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Utica Curling Club in Whitesboro. All equipment and instructions will be supplied to each participant. The following community fundraisers benefit Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital:
- Burger King: Now through Sept. 8, Carrols’ owned Burger King locations in Syracuse, Utica, Binghamton, and Watertown will offer a coupon for a free iced coffee or a free French toast sticks for a $1 donation.
- One Square Mile of Hope: One Square Mile of Hope paddle event will be held Sept. 14. This event creates a flotilla of canoes, kayaks and guide boats on Fourth Lake. The event is centered around a health fair, food, and music. For more information or to register, visit One Square Mile of Hope.

The Informed Patient podcast
The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists as they give an Alzheimer’s update, discuss loneliness in older adults and explain how f magnets could treat post-concussion headaches.
- New treatments for Alzheimer’s, and the latest research about the disease, are discussed by Sharon Brangman, MD, the chief of geriatrics.
- A study of loneliness and isolation among older adults is explained by public health researcher Roger Wong, PhD, and a student with whom he published a paper on the topic, Miguel Pica.
- A trial of magnets to treat the headaches that follow mild traumatic brain injury is detailed by Yi-Ling Kuo, PhD. Kuo, a neuroscientist and physical therapist, tells how the non-invasive technique will be administered and how people can sign up for the study.
