Donations for Mary Nelson’s backpack and school supplies drive due Aug. 8

Volunteers sought for event

Donations of new or gently used backpacks and new school supplies are sought to help local children prepare for the school year. Items are due by tomorrow, Aug. 8 and will be distributed at the 23rd annual Mary Nelson Youth Day BBQ to be held Saturday, Aug. 17. Walk with a Doc is Aug. 10

Leslie Kohman, MD, chief wellness officer and thoracic surgeon, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. at Onondaga Lake Park (meet by the skate park). The event begins with a brief talk followed by a walk. Participants can walk at their own pace and distance. The event is free and open to the public. Team Upstate Your Cause charity for 2024 seeks volunteers for event Aug. 22

Empower Parkinson, Team Upstate’s Your Cause charity for 2024, seeks volunteers to assist with their annual conference to be held Thursday, Aug. 22 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton, off Carrier Circle. Living an Active Life with Parkinson’s Disease is a free conference for those impacted by the disease. Volunteers are needed to help with administrative tasks including setting up conference tables, registering people, handing out lunch tickets, distributing conference and resource bookers, helping people find seats, and more. There are two time slots for 10 volunteers—five in the morning and five in the afternoon. Deadline for Emerging Leaders United scholarship applications is Aug. 30

Upstate employees are welcome to apply for a scholarship for Upstate’s chapter of Emerging Leaders United, an affinity group with United Way of Central New York. Participants of the Emerging Leaders program will represent Upstate Medical University and have the opportunity to attend leadership and community education programs, volunteer events, and network with leaders from Syracuse businesses. Emerging Leaders are required to fulfill 16 hours of volunteer service from September 2024 to September 2025. Enrollment for Global Health study on Covid in health care workers is Sept. 9, 17, 20

The Upstate Global Health Institute will conduct a study to define the incidence and clinical spectrum of Covid-19 in a group of healthcare workers over a period of one respiratory virus season—fall and winter. The study will characterize who gets sick, how long illness lasts, and how long others could be infected. The study will also look at responses to vaccination. This study is for employees only, who work at Upstate University Hospital and Upstate Community Hospital, full- or part-time, in clinical and non-clinical settings.

Global Health will be available to answer questions and enroll staff Sept. 9 and 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Room at Community. Downtown dates will be forthcoming. The study ends June 2025. Questions? Email [email protected].

Convocation is Sept. 18

Upstate’s Fall Faculty Convocation will be held Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium at Weiskotten Hall. A reception will follow in the courtyard. Upstate will recognize the academic and professional contributions of 25 individuals, including newly elected members of the Academy of Upstate Educators, 13 President’s awardees, four Chancellor’s awardees, three members who have achieved the Distinguished Professor rank, and two awards for philanthropic excellence.  

The Upstate community is invited to attend this celebration of achievements that contribute to the academic success of our students, the quality care of our patients, and advancing biomedical research. Clark Burn Center Trivia Night is Sept. 20

Clark Burn Center will host Trivia Night Sept. 20 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Crazy Daisies. The event includes trivia, raffle baskets, and prizes for best theme/costume and the top winning teams. Individual registration is $20, a group of four is $60, and a group of six is $80. Individuals can request to be added to a specific team or be part of a random team assignment. Honorary degree candidate nominations sought by Sept. 25

Upstate's Honorary Degree Committee invites nominations for 2024 Honorary Degree candidates. An honorary doctorate degree is the highest form of recognition offered by the SUNY Board of Trustees to persons of exceptional distinction. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit letters of nomination with the rationale for the nomination, and a summary of the candidate's accomplishments and contributions. These should be brief, no more than two pages. The deadline to submit is Monday, Sept. 25. Upstate Mental Health REACH workshop is Oct. 19

The Upstate Mental Health REACH educational program will host a workshop Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown. Speakers from Upstate Psychiatry include: Thomas Schwartz, MD; Nevena Radonjic, MD, PhD; Rachael Kuch Cecconi, MD; Zsuzsa Meszaros, MD, PhD; and Tolani Ajagbe, MD. Topics include: SSRIs and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression, psych meds and psychotherapy in primary care, managing alcohol use disorder, and medications for opioid use disorder. Participants sought to help with Lyme disease blood test study

Participants are sought help with a study to determine if an investigational new blood test, called Liaison LymeDetect, can detect the germ that causes Lyme disease sooner than conventional diagnostic tests. Current blood tests for Lyme disease can sometimes fail to confirm the illness during early infection. Global Health seeks participants who have been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease or are suspected by a practitioner to have Lyme disease and have developed a rash.
