Donations sought for Mary Nelson’s backpack and school supplies drive
New and gently used backpacks, and new school supplies, are sought for Mary Nelson’s backpack and school supplies drive to help local children prepare for the school year. Items will be distributed at the 23rd annual Mary Nelson Youth Day BBQ Saturday, Aug. 17. Donations will be accepted until Aug. 8 at various locations throughout campus. Upstate celebrates World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 1 to 7) and National Breastfeeding Month. Upstate employees are welcome to apply for a scholarship for Upstate’s chapter of Emerging Leaders United, an affinity group with United Way of Central New York. Participants of the Emerging Leaders program will represent Upstate Medical University and have the opportunity to attend leadership and community education programs, volunteer events, and network with leaders from Syracuse businesses. Endocrine research study seeks healthy participants for one-time blood draw
Upstate’s endocrine research team seeks healthy participants ages 45 to 65 years old with a body mass index of less than 25 kg/m2 or greater than 30 kg/m2 for a one-time blood draw. Participants cannot have diabetes or be on any diabetes-related medications, including weight loss medications like Wegovy. Participants sought to help with Lyme disease blood test study
Participants are sought help with a study to determine if an investigational new blood test, called Liaison LymeDetect, can detect the germ that causes Lyme disease sooner than conventional diagnostic tests. Current blood tests for Lyme disease can sometimes fail to confirm the illness during early infection. Global Health seeks participants who have been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease or are suspected by a practitioner to have Lyme disease and have developed a rash. Brain stimulation study seeks concussion patients
Volunteers are sought for a research study using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, as a novel treatment for chronic headaches and other post-concussion symptoms in people with mild traumatic brain injury. rTMS will be administered at the Institute for Human Performance. SUNY Center for Professional Development fall semester schedule now available
The SUNY Center for Professional Development's Project Management Fundamentals Fall 2024 Semester schedule is now available on the class information and registration page with class dates available in September, October and November 2024: https://sunycpd.eventsair.com/pmfworkshops/project-management-fundamentals.
The two-day workshop takes learners through the project management lifecycle and helps attendees distinguish the differences between projects and operational processes. This workshop seeks to provide a common framework and language to use when managing projects and when working on project teams at your institution. The focus of the training is to help SUNY employees understand the concepts and improve their project management skills by applying these concepts in real-world exercises. The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about role-playing games as therapy, running for fun and fitness, and bird flu concerns.
- A psychologist tells how she uses the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons to help her teen patients learn social skills. Robin Dean, PsyD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Upstate.
- Taking up running as a hobby isn’t hard, says physical therapist Bethany Hudson, DPT, who shares how she came to the activity and tips for those who want to start. She was the fastest Upstate runner in the Syracuse Workforce 5K Run this year.
- Bird flu is an ongoing concern, but likely nothing for the general public to worry about at the moment, says Stephen Thomas, MD, infectious disease specialist and director of the Upstate Global Health Institute, as he explains the disease and whom it affects.
