Research study seeks healthy adults and stroke survivors
Bokkyu Kim, PT, PhD, associate professor of Physical Therapy Education in Upstate’s College of Health Professions, is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate whether transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) therapy using near-infrared light can modulate brain activity to improve arm and hand motor function in chronic stroke survivors. The study seeks healthy older adults ages 65 to 85, and stroke survivors.
Participants will visit our lab once a week for three weeks. Each visit will involve baseline neurophysiological assessments of brain activity using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). tPBM therapy will be applied to the head, targeting the motor cortex, for 15 minutes. Brain activity will be reassessed immediately after tPBM therapy and again 30 minutes later. Each session will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
For stroke survivors: Participants will undergo the same 3-week experiment as healthy older adults. Afterward, they will take part in a 4-week arm and hand motor training program combined with tPBM therapy (1 hour per session, two sessions per week for 4 weeks). A comprehensive assessment of their arm and hand motor function will be conducted before and after the training program.
Direct all questions and interest to Bokkyu Kim, PT, PhD, at: [email protected].

The Informed Patient podcast
The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about lifelong foot care, integrating medical and mental health providers, and a team approach to easing a brain disorder.
- Caring for the feet over time and choosing the right shoe are addressed by podiatrist Ricardo Lundi, DPM, who is an assistant professor of medicine at Upstate’s Joslin Diabetes Center.
- A way to offer both regular medical care and mental health care is underway at Upstate, and psychologist Brian Rieger, PhD, explains how this can help both patients and medical providers. He is the director of the Integrated Behavioral Health Care Program at Upstate and an assistant professor in the psychiatry department.
- New, less painful treatments to treat the brain disorder hydrocephalus are being sought by a team from Upstate and SUNY’s Binghamton University. Upstate neurosurgeon and professor Satish Krishnamurthy, MD, describes the disorder – a fluid buildup – the research being done and the team’s goals. He has dedicated a good portion of his career to caring for hydrocephalus patients.
The Informed Patient podcast and HealthLink on Air radio show are produced by Upstate Marketing and University Communications. The Informed Patient interviews are available through various podcast platforms, including YouTube. HealthLink on Air is broadcast on WRVO Public Media at 6 a.m. Sundays. Audio and transcripts of the podcasts and the radio shows are also available at upstate.edu/informed.
