The Informed Patient Podcast
The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about implantable loop recorders, poisonous mushrooms and a vaccine against the chikungunya virus.
- Devices called implantable loop recorders can detect heart rhythms that might signal a stroke. How they work is explained by Stephanie Loveless, a nurse practitioner in neurology.
- Avoiding poisonous mushrooms is the topic of toxicologist Michael Hodgman, MD, of the Upstate New York Poison Center, who makes special note ot the white variety often found in people’s yards.
- While the chikungunya virus is not widespread in Central New York, travelers to certain regions might be exposed to it. A new vaccine is becoming available to combat the virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, and avoid the disease it causes. Onondaga County Health Commissioner Katie Anderson, MD, PhD, who is also an Upstate faculty member, discusses the vaccine.
