World Kidney Day is March 14

In celebration of World Kidney Day, Upstate Transplant Center will provide information on kidney health Thursday, March 14 from 9 a.m. to noon outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital. World Kidney Day focuses on raising awareness about kidney disease, the importance of overall kidney health, and early detection to reduce the impact of kidney disease. Questions? Vote for Hero in SUNY’s Mascot Madness competition by March 15

For the first time, Upstate’s mascot, Hero the Wolf, is competing in SUNY Mascot Madness. As with the NCAA’s March Madness, teams compete in brackets. For the first bracket, Hero is in a tight race with Ram-bo, the mascot of Farmington State College. Victory is determined by the number of votes each Mascot receives. Voting for the first round began Tuesday and ends Friday, March 15 at 3 p.m. You can vote for Hero at this SUNY website and read more about Hero, and the competition, at this SUNY website. Poison Prevention Week is March 17 to 23

To recognize National Poison Prevention Week March 17 to 23, Upstate New York Poison Center will host an informational table Monday, March 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital. National Poison Prevention Week serves as a reminder of the importance of poison prevention and safety inside and outside the home. The poison center is fast, free, confidential, and open 24/7 by calling 800-222-1222.



Wellness Speaks presentation on seasonal depression is March 18

Nayla Khoury, MD, Upstate psychiatrist, will present strategies to combat seasonal depression during Wellness Speaks March 18 at 10 a.m. via WebEx. Student Research Day is March 19

Student Research Day will be held March 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. Oral presentations will take place in 2231 Weiskotten Hall with a poster session to follow in 4414 Academic Building. The annual event highlights student research from all four Upstate colleges and includes a keynote presentation, four student talks, and an early evening poster session and reception. Volunteers sought for breakfast service at the Samaritan Center March 20

Ask HR launches March 20

Human Resources will launch Ask HR Wednesday, March 20. Ask HR will answer HR questions anytime, anywhere and will be available on desktop computers and mobile devices. The system will feature a virtual help desk where employees can request assistance and track their requests as they are helped by HR experts. Ask HR will appear on the Upstate iPage March 20. Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month information table is March 21

Katie Krawczyk, MA, RDN, CNSC, Upstate Cancer Center registered dietitian, and the We Matter team will host an information table March 21 from 10 a.m. to noon in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center. Yoga for All is March 29

Yoga for All sessions will be held March 29 from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. in 9405 A/B Upstate University Hospital and virtually. Sessions are facilitated by Upstate clinicians trained in Trauma Adapted Yoga, a form of yoga based on trauma research, evidence-based yoga therapy and body-based methods with gentle exercises for self-management of common symptoms and reactions. No experience is necessary and all are welcome. Flex Spending Account deadline is March 31 

Those enrolled in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA-Health and Dependent Care) in 2023, have until March 31, 2024 to submit any expenses incurred in 2023 for reimbursement: https://goer.ny.gov/program-information. Participants will be able to use up to $610 of monies remaining in the 2023 Health Care Spending Account toward eligible expenses incurred during the 2024 calendar year, as long as the account has been open as of Dec. 31, 2023. In addition, participants will now be able to use the remaining balance in the 2023 Dependent Care Advantage Account toward eligible expenses between Jan. 1 to March 15, 2024. Claims must be submitted by the March 31 deadline.

Cystic Fibrosis Clinic Teaching Day is April 5

Registration required by March 15

Upstate’s Cystic Fibrosis Clinic Teaching Day will be held April 5 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Rosamond Gifford Zoo. A virtual attendance option will be provided. Speakers include Lisa Greene, MA, CFLE, parent of two adult children with cystic fibrosis, and Kim Reno, ACSW, LISW-S, Senior manager of health systems innovation and navigation at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Neuro Research Day is April 5

Neuro Research Day will be held April 5 from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 2231 Weiskotten Hall. Speakers include:

  • 10:45 a.m. William Zeiger, MD, PhD, assistant professor at University of California-Los Angeles, will present "Mechanisms of circuit plasticity in the healthy and injured somatosensory cortex”
  • 11:55 a.m. Bradley Lega, MD, associate professor at University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center, will present “Multimodal characterization of human episodic memory circuits”
  • 3 p.m. Monica Vetter, PhD, professor and chair of Neurobiology at University of Utah, will present “Pathways for generation and elimination of retinal neurons”

Upstate Concussion Center symposium is April 15 

The fifth annual Upstate Concussion Center symposium will be held Monday, April 15 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Institute for Human Performance. Updated Guidelines for Managing Students and Athletes Following Concussion will teach best practices for assessing and managing students and athletes following injury using the most up-to-date consensus statement recommendations. Upstate Healthcare Exploration Camp is April 25 and 26

The 2024 Upstate Healthcare Exploration Camp will be held Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26 at Community. Applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. March 15. Space is limited. Campers will be selected through an application and essay vetting process. Trivia for Pancreatic Cancer is April 27

Trivia for Pancreatic Cancer will be held Saturday, April 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Solvay Tyrol Club (213 Lamont Ave.). Teams can include up to six players and the fee to play is $20 per person. There will be prizes for winning team, gift baskets and 50/50 raffles, snacks, and a cash bar.
