The Informed Patient podcast this week: pelvic floor exercises, TBI care, and hepatic artery infusion
The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about minimally invasive spine surgery, an operation to treat pancreatic cancer and a medical mission to Ukraine.
- Slipped (herniated) disks, spinal stenosis and spinal fusions are among the spinal operations that can be done with a few tiny incisions and result in faster recovery times. Neurosurgeon Ali Hazama, MD, explains these newer surgical methods.
- The Whipple procedure can be used to treat some early cancers of the pancreas. The challenging surgery is discussed by Mashaal Dhir, MD, chief of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
- Two Ukrainian-born urologists from Upstate traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, to perform reconstructive surgery on soldiers with severe battlefield injuries. They were joined by colleagues from Poland and Mexico in the mission. Dmitriy Nikolavsky, MD, director of reconstructive urology, tells of the mission and the charity set up by his colleague, urology chair Gennady Bratslavsky, MD, to help Ukraine.
The Informed Patient podcast and HealthLink on Air radio show are produced by Upstate Marketing and University Communications. The Informed Patient interviews are available through various podcast platforms, including YouTube. HealthLink on Air is broadcast on WRVO Public Media at 6 a.m. Sundays. Audio and transcripts of the podcasts and the radio shows are also available at upstate.edu/informed.
