Global Health seeks help with new flu vaccine study

Upstate’s Global Health seeks participants for an investigational flu vaccine study using mRNA technology. Participants should be 18 to 49 years of age and have not received a flu vaccine in the last six months. If chosen, participants will be in the study for about seven months. Suite 1K ends Saturday Covid testing hours

Suite 1K (located at Community) has closed Saturday Covid testing hours. Suite 1K will remain open to the public and the Upstate community Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site closes for lunch from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Scheduled appointments and walk-ins are welcome. Scheduled appointments take priority. Saliva and nasal PCR testing are available. Team captains sought for Making Strides

The Upstate community is invited to help Sarah’s Guest House, the university’s 2022 Your Cause partner, with two volunteer activities: 

—painting a shed and completing yard work Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

—interior painting Aug. 18 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sarah’s Guest House

Mindful Meditation is Aug. 8 and 10

Mindful Meditation will be held Aug. 8 and 10 at 10 a.m. via WebEx. Annemarie Cristino, LCSW, CEAP, Upstate’s Employee Assistance Program coordinator, will offer 30 minutes of mindful meditation instruction and information. Easy for you, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 7335B Upstate University Hospital. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. Upstate Foundation Walk/Run for Kids is Aug. 14

The Upstate Foundation’s second annual Walk/Run for Kids will be held Aug. 14 at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton. The event includes a 5K USATF-certified run, a two-mile walk, and a fun run for kids. The event benefits Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. More than 12,000 visits to the children’s hospital are made annually by Southern Tier families. Volunteers sought for Mary Nelson’s Youth Center 21st annual Back-To-School BBQ Aug. 20

The 21st annual Backpack and School Supply giveaway and BBQ event seeks volunteers to help set up, clean up, and hand out supplies Aug. 20 at the corner of S. Salina St. and Wood Ave.

Joseph Domachowske, MD, professor of pediatrics and microbiology/immunology and pediatric infectious diseases specialist, will present a pediatric Covid-19 update Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

22nd annual Biomedical Sciences Retreat is Sept. 7

The event is free and features guest speakers, a poster session highlighting student research (abstracts due Aug. 17), and an introduction to the incoming class of graduate students.

Guest speaker is Alejandro Sanchez Alvarado, Ph.D., executive director and chief scientific officer, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and a faculty member at The Graduate School of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

Alumni speaker is Peng Zhang, Ph.D., a former graduate of the Neuroscience Program and current assistant professor of Neurosciences at Case Western Reserve University.

Give Burns the Boot kickball tournament is Sept. 10

Upstate’s Clark Burn Center will hold the second annual Give Burns the Boot kickball tournament Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Syracuse Sports Association Syracuse Kickball Park, Liverpool. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jessica Summers, MD, Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Build your own team of 10 for $300 ($25 for each additional player). Teams must have a minimum of three female players. All players must be 14 years of age or older. Registration includes a T-shirt.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Sept. 25

DiBella’s Subs is running Cups for a Cause during the month of August. With the purchase of a fountain drink, 50 cents will be donated to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Create Change at JOANN in August: JOANN will partner with Children’s Miracle Network in August to raise money for local member hospitals, including Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, through customer donations.
