Primary Care Task Force education session is May 25
Upstate’s Sarah Khalil, MD, will present Managing Gout in the Primary Care Setting May 25 from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Participants will learn about the diagnosis, care, treatment, and referral protocols related to gout. Dunkin’ Iced Coffee Day is May 25
Dunkin’ Iced Coffee Day will be held May 25 nationwide. Dunkin’ franchises in Central New York, the Mohawk Valley and northern New York locations will donate $1 from each iced coffee sold to support patients and families at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital through the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation. Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, June 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 7335B Upstate University Hospital. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. Employee Recognition Day is June 9
Upstate will celebrate its 38th annual Employee Recognition Day June 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the OnCenter. Masks are required, lunches will be offered to-go after the program. Peer supporter training will be held June 16 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom. This is open to those who are new to peer support and those who wish to refresh skills. Student Admissions will host virtual information sessions this summer for degree programs in: radiation therapy, respiratory therapy, x-ray, ultrasound, RN-BS, medical technology and medical biotechnology, physician assistant, physical therapy, clinical perfusion, medical school, joint MD/MBA, and the Upstate accelerated scholars BA or BS/MD program. ERS and PFRS vesting for tiers 5 and 6
New legislation changed vesting requirements for tier 5 and 6 members as of April 9. For more information on the changes, visit: https://www.nyretirementnews.com/becoming-vested/. Becoming vested is a crucial milestone for NYSLRS membership. Participants become vested after earning enough years of service credit. More on service credit can be found here: https://www.osc.state.ny.us/retirement/publications/service-credit-tiers-2-through-6. Once vested, participants have earned the right to receive a retirement benefit even if leaving public employment before retirement. The changes to tier 5 and 6 vesting, does not change eligibility for NYSHIP retiree health insurance. Employees must meet all eligibility requirements, including the minimum of 10 years of creditable service in a benefits eligible status to be considered for NYSHIP retiree health insurance.

Nellie Hurley Scholarship applications now being accepted
Advocates for Upstate is now taking applications for the 2022 Nellie Hurley Scholarships. Scholarships up to $3,000 will be awarded for fall semester 2022. Those eligible include Upstate employees or volunteers who will have been active at Upstate for six months or more prior to the June 24, 2022 application deadline and who meet all other criteria. The scholarships may be used for undergraduate studies only, directed toward any health profession at an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Proceeds benefit Advocates’ programs to benefit Upstate University Hospital and Upstate Community Hospital.
