Upstate Equity Forum is Feb. 17

The Upstate Equity Forum—a forum focused on equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging—will be held Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. via Zoom. The Upstate community is welcome to attend. 

Speakers include Institutional Equity Officer and Title IX Coordinator Katie King, JD, and Complaint Investigator Alex Gilbertson. The forum will be moderated by Upstate Chief Diversity Officer Daryll Dykes, MD, PhD, JD.

King and Gilbertson will answer frequently asked questions about Title IX, a federal law protecting individuals from discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.

Ash Wednesday is Feb. 17

Spiritual Care will be available at both hospitals for Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. PPE will be worn and ashes will be distributed with 6” swabs. All are asked to physically distance, and wait patiently to receive ashes. 

Spiritual Care will attempt to get to patient floors. Call directly to refer patients for ashes: 315-464-4687 for Downtown or 315-492-5740 for Community. 

Upstate University Hospital schedule: 

  • 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. in small OR conference room, 5413 East Tower
  • 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Peds Chapel, 12th floor Upstate Golisano
  • 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Meditation Room, Upstate Cancer Center
  • Noon to 4 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel, first floor Upstate University Hospital 

Upstate Community Hospital schedule: 

  • 11 a.m. brief service in meditation room and distribution of ashes to all units as requested from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.



NYS Deferred Comp webinars are Feb. 23 and 25


NYS Deferred Comp’s Dan Kain will host two deferred compensation pre-retirement webinars Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. and noon. This webinar will focus on calculating New York state pension, how and when to withdraw NY state deferred comp money and the tax implications.

Kain will host two differed compensation enrollment webinars Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. and noon. This webinar will focus on the basics of saving for retirement using deferred comp as well as how to enroll in the plan.

Center for Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club is Feb. 25

Beyond the Doctorate Research Day is March 3

Upstate will shine a light on research studies conducted by postdocs, fellows, and residents during the Virtual Beyond the Doctorate Research Day Wednesday, March 3 beginning at 1 p.m. via Zoom.

The virtual event will kick off with short research talks from our postdocs and residents followed by a keynote address featuring Frank Middleton, PhD. Immediately following the afternoon presentations, a virtual poster session will be held on Remo. 

The Virtual Beyond the Doctorate Research Day is presented by the College of Graduate Studies and the Office of Graduate Medical Education. New hours for Ainsley Surplus Warehouse begin March 5

Beginning March 5, Ainsley Surplus Warehouse hours will be Fridays from 8 to 11 a.m. No appointment required. On Fridays from 8 to 11 a.m., call 315-464-2438; all other days/times call 315-464-5643. 



Upstate Nurse Instant Decision Day deadline is March 7

Upstate Nurses are invited to apply for the Online Bachelor's Program using a simplified and free admission application requiring only one standardized reference from their manager. Completed applications will lead to an invite to attend the Instant Decision Day where they will receive in person their admissions decision, receive course advisement directly form the program director and speak with the tuition assistance and professional development coordinator. Clinician Peer Support Program of CNY offers training March 8, 29, 31

In support of the Clinician Peer Support Program of Central New York and the P2P Peer support program offered through the Medical Society of the State of NY, Upstate will offer three training sessions.


Training sessions will be held:

March 8 from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

March 29 from noon to 2:30 p.m.

March 31 from 2:30 to 5 p.m.


This 2.5 hour virtual training is developed and facilitated by Jo Shapiro MD, FACS, Brigham and Women’s hospital. 

Training is available to physicians, advance practice clinicians, nurses, residents, behavioral health clinicians and respiratory therapists. We also welcome interested administrators to observe the training to better understand the program. Please offer the training to potential peer supporters—clinicians who are respected in their area and who are good, kind and empathetic listeners for their colleagues.

Submissions sought for 34th annual Dearing Writing Award Competition through March 12

The Center for Bioethics and Humanities seeks submissions for the 34th annual Dearing Writing Award Competition through March 12. The competition is open to all SUNY Upstate matriculated students, residents, employees, and faculty. Works of fiction, essay, poetry, and memoir will be accepted on any subject matter. 

Submit two copies: one copy should have the writer’s name, address, telephone number, and category on it; students should indicate their college and class year. The second copy should include only the title and category with the work. Please note: one entry per writer, maximum of 2,500 words double-spaced for essays and fiction, and no more than 5 poems.

Email submission to Andrea Musolino at musolina@upstate.edu. Winners will be announced and awards presented April 7. Winners will receive a monetary award. All submissions receive consideration for CBH’s annual journal The Healing Muse, available online at:  www.thehealingmuse.org

Save the date: Student Research Day is April 7

Student Research Day will be held virtually April 7, 2021. Student talks will begin on Zoom at 1 p.m., followed by the keynote address with Erin Bromage, PhD, UMass Dartmouth, at 3 p.m. One student from each college will be selected to give a 10-minute oral presentation and five-minute Q and A. There will be a Virtual Poster Session from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Remo, an interactive virtual platform. 2021 calendar update—Juneteenth declared legal holiday, June 19

The New York State Department of Civil Service Attendance and Leave Unit has recently declared Juneteenth a legal holiday.  Juneteenth 2021 falls on Saturday, June 19 and all Upstate units and departments will operate on a red holiday schedule on this day with staffing for essential services only. When a holiday falls on an employee’s regular scheduled day off (pass day), state and Research Foundation employees who are entitled to time off with pay on days observed as holidays by the state, shall be granted compensatory time off. A compensatory day off in lieu of the holiday will be scheduled at times mutually convenient to the employee and Upstate. Eligible employees scheduled or directed to work on any such Saturday may receive additional compensation in lieu such compensatory time in accordance with State attendance rules.



2021 Independence Day holiday will be observed Monday, July 5

New York state and Research Foundation employees entitled to time off with pay on days observed as holidays by the state, will observe Independence Day on Monday, July 5, 2021 as noted in the 2021 Holiday Calendar: https://www.upstate.edu/payroll/pdf/calendar/general/upstate_annual_calendar.pdf. The 2021 edition of the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) General Information Book is now available for employees of New York State and their covered dependents

The booklet explains certain rights and responsibilities NYSHIP (Empire Plan) enrollees have. Receipt of this booklet does not guarantee eligibility for or enrolled in coverage and only provides general information about eligibility, enrollment and other NYSHIP rules.

Participants will be notified of changes through mailings to the address as it appears on your NYSHIP record. To ensure Human Resources has a current address, contact Kathi Exner at ExnerK@Upstate.edu or 315-464-4941. The Employee Benefits Division is reachable at 800-833-4344.

The Department of Civil Service is responsible for administering NYSHIP and determines NYSHIP’s administrative policies, practices and procedures. NYSHIP rules, requirements and benefits are established in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, as well as through negotiations with state employee unions and extended administratively for groups not subject to those negotiations.
