Hope Café now offers free delivery to Upstate University Hospital
Hope Café, located on the first floor of the Academic Building and on the ninth floor of Weiskotten Hall, now offer free delivery once each day to the main lobby of Upstate University Hospital. Meals should be ordered before 11:40 a.m. each day for delivery at 11:55 a.m. The once-daily bulk delivery of orders will be available near the security checkpoint. To order from the daily menu or to choose the meal of the day, visit: https://hopecafeny.square.site. Power of Us, the Upstate Foundation’s employee giving program, gives employees the opportunity to donate to one of the Foundation’s 1,200 funds supporting all areas of Upstate’s mission. With no administrative fees, 100 percent of the gift goes directly to the designated fund. Shoulder Pain and Injuries, Part 2: Surgical Options will be held Thursday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. Ryan Cox, MD., Upstate Orthopedics, will discuss surgical treatment options for shoulder pain and injuries, what is involved in each procedure, what to consider when choosing the best option for you, and the typical recovery process for each approach. Walk with a Doc is May 10
Lubov Leontieva, MD, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, May 10 at 9 a.m. at Onondaga Lake Park. Leontieva’s specialties are psychiatry and neurology. She will present a brief talk before the walk kicks off: Keeping Your Mind Healthy. Participants will meet on the grass near the visitor’s center, and everyone can walk their own pace and distance. The event is free and open to the public. Inventory of all mobile medical equipment begins May 12
Equipment Services and Healthcare Technology Management (formerly Clinical Engineering) will conduct a complete inventory of mobile medical equipment May 12 to 23 at Upstate University Hospital, Upstate Cancer Center, and Community. Maximus, an outside vendor, will assist. The goal is to capture as close to 100 percent of all mobile medical equipment as possible. We ask that all equipment be removed from cabinets and drawers during this process. A round yellow sticker will be placed on each piece of equipment after it is inventoried. - Dominick DeMichele, M.S.Ed., R.T.(R)(CT), clinical assistant professor of Medical Imaging & Radiation Sciences, retires after 10 years of service to Upstate and 43 in medical imaging.
- Erin Wentz, PT, PhD, PCS, associate professor of Physical Therapy Education, retires after more than eight years of service.

White Coat Rock is May 15
Upstate’s own powerhouse band, The Spinal Chords, featuring Drs. Larry Chin and Mike Vertino, and talented students from the College of Medicine will serve as the opening act for this fundraising concert Thursday, May 15. Doors open at 7 p.m., concert starts at 8 p.m., with presale tickets at $15 with tickets available at the door for $20. CNY Favorite, Jam Theory, will follow to close out the night. Yoga retreat is May 16 and 17
Upstate will host a yoga retreat Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Performance Center on the 11th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. The Healthcare Technology Management name has been updated from Clinical Engineering to reflect a wider range of responsibilities, including technology life cycle planning, budgeting, acquisition, device integration, and medical device cybersecurity risk management. The name change reflects a broader and more strategic approach to managing healthcare technology. Healthcare Technology Management remains part of Information Management and Technology.

The Informed Patient podcast
The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with Upstate experts about occupational therapy, treating opioid use disorder and using AI in mental health care.
- Explaining occupational therapy and how it differs from physical therapy are occupational therapists Alexis Antoniou and Paige Courbat.
- The various ways opioid use disorder can be treated are discussed by Theresa Baxter, a nurse practitioner in addiction medicine.
- Artificial intelligence, in the form of an app or a chatbot, are being used to offer mental health care. Bioethicist Serife Tekin, PhD, explores the pros and cons of using such technology.
