Upstate Commencement to be held at SRC Arena
Upstate Medical University will award 406 degrees and certificates during Commencement May 4. The event will be held at the SRC Arena and Events Center, 4585 W Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. Security update to payroll change requests
To improve security and protect employee paychecks, effective Wednesday, April 30, payroll change requests must be submitted online through New York State Payroll or Research Foundation portals. Traffic alert for the Upstate campus
CNY Alliance will perform work on Irving Avenue between Harrison and Adams streets Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1. Access to the Campus Activities Building loading dock area and B-1 lot will be closed during this phase of construction. B-1 parkers have been notified of lot closure and alternative parking accommodations. Parkers will be informed of this lot closure. This work is part of the I-81 project.

Patient Advocacy seeks new, unused clothing
Patient Advocacy seeks new, unused clothing to build the Donations for Discharge program. There are cases when Upstate patients may not have the proper attire to leave the hospital at discharge. Donations for Discharge will allow staff 24/7 access to clothing for patients in need. Items can be dropped off at the Patient Advocacy Office, 1511 Upstate University Hospital. Skin integrity education fair is April 29, 30
Information for nursing staff on how to protect the integrity of patient skin will be held April 29 and 30 from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. in CC0124 at Community. The skin integrity education fair is open to all staff. Nursing quality coordinators will be available to answer questions on safe patient handling and discuss products available at Upstate. Upstate will host a yoga retreat Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Performance Center on the 11th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Upstate Edge opens for applicants May 5
The application period for the College of Nursing’s Upstate Edge will open May 5. Upstate Edge is a free, flexible program to help full-time RNs earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing while working. Designed to address healthcare shortages and strengthen Central New York’s workforce, the program offers fully online courses, 16 to 22-month tracks, and covers all costs (tuition, fees, books—valued at approximately $20,000) for eligible full-time employees. Applications open May 5 for the introductory Nursing 2.0 course (8 weeks, starts June 23), preparing nurses to enroll in the RN-BS program this fall. Free stroke screening event is May 6
A free stroke screening event will be held Tuesday, May 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. by appointment only at the Oasis/HealthLink Learning Center, 6333 State Route 298, East Syracuse. Appointment times will vary. The stroke screening will happen in three parts: a nurse will discuss the participant’s overall health, a pharmacist will discuss medications, a medical doctor or nurse practitioner will assess the participant’s stroke risk score and offer personalized tips for reducing risk. Experts from the Upstate Stroke Team will be available to answer questions. Space for this event is limited. An appointment is required to attend. Walk with a Doc is May 10
Lubov Leontiera, MD, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, May 10 at 9 a.m. at Onondaga Lake Park. Leontiera’s specialties are psychiatry and neurology. She will present a brief talk before the walk kicks off: Keeping Your Mind Healthy.

Inventory of all mobile medical equipment begins May 12
Equipment Services and Healthcare Technology Management (formerly Clinical Engineering) will conduct a complete inventory of mobile medical equipment May 12 to 23 at Upstate University Hospital, Upstate Cancer Center, and Community. Maximus, an outside vendor, will assist. The goal is to capture as close to 100 percent of all mobile medical equipment as possible. We ask that all equipment be removed from cabinets and drawers during this process. A round yellow sticker will be placed on each piece of equipment after it is inventoried. Proposals for Clark Endowment for Pediatric Research due June 1
The Clark Endowment for Pediatric Research seeks proposals for funding. An initiative established through Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and the Upstate Foundation, the endowment supports basic or clinical research projects, and research equipment relevant to child health up to $15,000 for one year. Funds allocated in 2025 are available from August 1, 2025, through July 31, 2026. Applications are due June 1, 2025. Upstate’s 41st annual Employee Recognition Day will take place Thursday, June 12 at the OnCenter. The event will include honoring those achieving a five-year milestone this year. Global Health seeks study participants
Pfizer Flu/Covid Combo Study: The Upstate Global Health Institute seeks healthy participants ages 65 and older to help advance research for an investigational Covid-19 and flu combination vaccine. The clinical trial will last approximately six months, during which participants will be asked to attend at least four study visits. Those who have not received a Covid-19 or flu vaccine in the past 5 months and have not tested positive for influenza in the last 6 months, contact us about qualifying for the study at 315-464-9869 or [email protected].
Remote Covid Study: Global Health seeks individuals 18 years of age or older who have received a Covid-19 vaccine within the last 14 days, or be willing to receive an approved Covid-19 vaccine before starting the study, and be able to use devices to collect samples such as blood, nasal fluid and saliva. Brain stimulation study seeks concussion patients
Volunteers are sought for a research study using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, as a novel treatment for chronic headaches and other post-concussion symptoms in people with mild traumatic brain injury. rTMS will be administered at the Institute for Human Performance.
