Upstate Announcements for April 23, 2025
Drone activity over downtown campus
Upstate University Hospital’s Air Upstate has initiated drone flights between Geneva Tower lawn and Nappi Wellness Institute (NWI) rooftop weekdays between 8 and 11 a.m., weather permitting. This drone flight initiative has been approved by the FAA. The drones are carrying specimens from the Transplant Center at Upstate Specialty Services to the Nappi Wellness Institute, where they are then transported the pathology lab at the Upstate Cancer Center. The use of drones expedites the testing of patients in the Transplant Center who must remain on site until results are analyzed, in case adjustments are needed in medications.
Air Upstate partners with drone operator Causey Aviation Unmanned (CAU) to complete deliveries. CAU is licensed and has received approvals through the FAA to complete the planned drone flights. Throughout their operations in New York, North Carolina, and Texas, CAU has completed over 125,000 delivery flights (including over 4,900 medication delivery flights at Upstate Community Hospital). The drones are equipped with multiple redundant safety features to prevent accidents, including, as a final fail-safe, an automatically deploying parachute to lower the drone safely to the ground. The drones are not equipped with cameras or microphones—there is no impact on the privacy of Geneva Tower residents.
