March is National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month. There are more than 26 registered dietitians working at Upstate in various inpatient and outpatient settings. Upstate employs 170 nutrition services staff who work throughout the hospitals at Upstate and Community. Patient Experience/Patient Relations Facts and Snacks is March 19

Facts and Snacks will be held today, March 19 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Patient Relations conference room, 1502 Upstate University Hospital. Poison Prevention Week event is March 20

Upstate New York Poison Center will host two events in celebration of National Poison Prevention Week, March 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside and outside the cafeteria at Community and March 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital. Stop by to learn more, pick up resources, and receive poison prevention giveaways. Upstate staff can get involved by sharing poison prevention tips with patients and encouraging everyone to save 1-800-222-1222 in their phones for quick access to the Upstate New York Poison Center experts.

Managing diabetes with the help of PT is March 20

Steven Lounsbury, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, CAFS, and Jason O’Neill, PTA, will present Diabetes Management with Rehab Providers Thursday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. Center for Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club is March 27

The Center for Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club will be held March 27 at noon via Zoom. The 2022 US Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned the right to abortion in the U.S. This has placed physicians, especially OB/GYNs, in a position where they must make a choice as to how to manage the conflict between their medical judgement and federal law. Physicians are not a monolithic group, and we will discuss the various roles they have chosen to play in the post Dobbs world. Narcan training session is March 28

The Onondaga County Health Department will offer a Narcan (naloxone) training session Friday, March 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. in 318 Health Sciences Library in Weiskotten Hall. Narcan is a medication given to those having an opioid/heroin overdose to prevent death. Participants will learn the signs of an overdose and how to administer the medication. Upstate Trauma will offer free Stop the Bleed courses Wednesday, March 26 from 10 to 11 a.m. and Wednesday, April 30 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Upstate HealthLink/Oasis, 6333 NY-298, E. Syracuse. Donate Life Month events are April 1 and 18

To mark Donate Life Month, flag raising events will be held April 1 at 10 a.m. in the front circle near the Donate Life flag at Upstate University Hospital and again at 1 p.m. at Community. Mini flags for each organ, eye, and tissue donation will be placed and the large flag will be raised to commemorate the month.

Upstate’s Organ Donor Council seeks donations for the Donate Life virtual silent auction, to be held April 18 to 25. Donations are due by April 15. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative, most lucrative, and best theme. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help promote organ donation and register new organ donors. Walk with a Doc is April 5

Walk with a Doc will be held Saturday, April 5 at 9 a.m. on the indoor track located upstairs at the Baldwinsville YMCA. The walk will begin with a brief talk by Asalim Thabet, MD, who specializes in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. Thabet will speak on summer safety reminders and wellness. Kick Butts Earth Day event is April 22

The Tobacco-Free Task Force will host a Kick Butts Earth Day event Tuesday, April 22 from 9 to 11 a.m. beginning in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center and from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning in the main lobby of Community. Global Health seeks participants for remote Covid study and RSV study

Covid: Upstate’s Global Health Institute seeks participants 18 years of age or older who have received a Covid vaccine within the last 14 days or be willing to receive an approved Covid vaccine before starting the study. Participants must also be able to use devices to collect samples, such as: blood, nasal fluid, and saliva. Participants will have samples collected for one year and be asked to wear a smartwatch-like device for a minimum of 20 hours per day, including while sleeping. RSV: Global Health seeks volunteers 18 years of age and older who are currently experiencing cold symptoms—cough, wheezing, shortness of breath— for a Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) study. Applications open for radiographer studies

Radiographers interested in earning their BPS degree in CT or MRI are invited to submit an application for the fall 2025 term. The clinical regions for fall 2025 will be Central New York for BPS-CT, and Rochester, Utica, Binghamton and Watertown for BPS-MRI. April is Occupational Therapy Month

Upstate employs 83 occupational therapists who treat patients with a variety of issues and injuries, such as: cardiovascular, brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, orthopedic, trauma, cancer, and more. OTs work in acute care settings at all Upstate hospitals, rehab units, the transitional care unit, and outpatient clinics. Occupational therapy focuses on therapeutic use of everyday activities or occupations to help people participate in meaningful and purposeful activities. Thank an OT in April.

Save the date: Rolling for Recovery bowling fundraiser is May 2

Upstate’s Stroke Team will host Rolling for Recovery May 2 at Flamingo Bowl in Liverpool. Registration is open online, here: https://e.givesmart.com/events/Gnf/.
